Pain during adjustment

#1 Post by jcm »

I just had my first adjustment done a couple days ago. I was well aware that there would be some discomfort following the adjustment, but i was not prepared for the discomfort during the adjustment. Does anyone else find it really hurts when they are putting on the new o rings. When he put the first one on my front tooth I thought the whole tooth was going to be pushed out or beak off...I was white knuckling it. Some of the other ones really hurt too. Does any one else experience this? Does it get better with future adjustment. Surprisingly, I have had not pain since the adjustment...just sitting in the chair was tense.

I haven't had any major pain during adjustments, but I just got a power chain put on yesterday, and they really had to yank it to get it around the teeth! I know if my teeth were at all sensitive like they have been In the past, it would have hurt a lot. Probably your teeth are more sensitive since it is your first adjustment and they're still moving a lot. Did you tell your ortho how much it hurt? Maybe they can be more gentle if they know.

I have had three adjustmants so far and my experience is the same as yours. It feels like my ortho is pushing down hard on each tooth and twisting those scissor like things around. Its not painful but not pleasant either. Its funny cause when i first got my braces on I figured I must be careful how i clean around them, the pressure from my electric toothbrush, types of harder food etc but yeah she really goes for it when changing the ligs!

Adjustments generally shouldn't hurt. There are exceptions with SL brackets that are tight and have to be pushed on quite hard in order to open the doors or clip, mobilizing impacted canines, and doubling up tight powerchain.

It is possible that your teeth are still moving along well with the current set up and that it is too early to have an adjustment done.

a couple of weeks ago i went in to see my ortho just to have my ligs, powerchains and wires changed. it was not an adjustment but just me wanting them changed because my ligs and powerchains were discoloured and my white wires were losing their coating. this visit was just 2 weeks and a couple days after my last adjustment so maybe my teeth were not ready to be touched yet. one of my front teeth hurt like hell when the ortho was putting the lig on. not sure why that one alone hurt at the time. prior to this, i haven't experienced any pain at any of my previous ortho visits.

I had my first adjustment last week , I experienced exactly the same discomfort while my ortho was changing the ligs and specially when he touches the teeth with the metal scissor but they are very sensitive until now bc they are moving I cant even bite hard yet .

Specially when I asked him to cut the extra wire cuz when he tied it he pulled it and there were an extra behind the molar band which was hurting my inside mouth it hurts sooo much when he tried to cut it and when he touched my molar.

I guess it's normal !! I usually feel discomfort when the metal spoon touches my tooth so imagine the feeling with a hard push of a scissor

Been in braces 2 years now. Every single adjustment had been painful. Some more than others. Now I just know to expect some pain and take Ibuprofin ahead of time. Sore for the next 2-3 days. Then everything is fine. Until the next adjustment. When you expect it ...it doesn't seem as bad. But if it comes as a surprise. Ouch!! I still white knuckle it on occasion. And really sweat. Anyway I don't feel it is abnormal.

I haven't had any pain except when he puts a power chain on my right canine, it wants to drift away but it's been pulled to the middle.

When I had my first adjustment, I felt that same type of discomfort but it was because my teeth were pretty sensitive from moving. My previous adjustments have been pain free for the most part, besides the usual sore for a 2 to 3 days later.

mine do hurt a bit everytime. But if they go anywhere near my front teeth (mainly top) argh its horrible. First adjustment I didn't take any painkillers before and it hurt so god damn much. I bit the woman's finger accidently haha.... I didn't even know I was doing it. She had to ask me to let go!!

I have just had jaw surgery 7 weeks ago to fix an open bite and my first adjustment is this week.... very very scared as my teeth hurt lots atm!
