herbst appliance

#1 Post by mel2012 »

does an herbst appliance work on an adult? i really don't want surgery and many 'functional' orthodontists have advised against my ortho's advice of extractions and brace for for severe overjet (class 2?) They said it can cause 'dish-in' whats this? please show me a picture. I told the lady at the hospital i didn't want the jaw surgery (nhs hospital) and she said it is my only option as the herbst wouldn't work :-( if that wouldn't work what about the MARA? is it available in the UK? please don't tell me to get different opinions from variuos orthodontists as i really cannot afford to keep paying for an initial consultation (plus it's hard to find many clinics where i live) thanks in advance.

Yes, the herbst appliance does work. It basically trains your jaws to bite together the way they should then elastics and full braces will be used to finalize your bite. You just hvae to be careful if your overbite isn't really bad then it may indeed give you an underbite. But they tighten the herbst so it works. Extractions basically crashes in your face by pulling everything bag to close the spaces. Think about it if you have a tent with stakes to hole it up and you tae those out your tenst's going to come crashing in. Same with the face. Yeah MARA is available in the UK, it's just like an advanced verion of the herbst appliance that works a litle better.

Well the Mara is in for long enough to train the jaw to not relapse. IN plus you get braces to make your bite fit perfectly once the jaws get aligned propperly. The Mara can be found at pretty much any orthodontist. I would jsut call around and ask if their offices use the MARA. Pretend your doing a school project on orthodontics. And once you find one go for a consult with them ;) pretty slick but it works. From what I've been told in treatment the appliances cost anywhere from 500 to 1,500 dollars at most.

Hi Mel,

I was offered a herbst on the NHS but they said it would not work as well as surgery on a adult so I decided on braces and surgery which was fitted on friday at my local hospital.

At 1st I did see 2 private orthodontist who both agreed that I should see a consoltant and both refered me to the hospital and before any final decissions was taken my i went to joint clinic and to see a hospital consoltatnt and orthodontist who wanted a bone scan and Ct scan to check my jaw joints were not growing and forcing the jaws out.

what part of the UK are you in Mel

Hope this is of some help

Hi Mel

I 1st off all went to see a private orthodonntist who in turn refered me to my hospital to see a hospital orthodomtist and she decided i shpuld i see a consoltant in Joint clinic and after many xrays, bone scans and ct scan i was given 2 options by the hospital orthodontist which was a herbst and fixed braces which she said would take aroundb 30 months and as my age could not guarantee it would work fully and may need surgery still after or fixed braces and orthognathic surgery and would guaranteee a better result so this is why i have chosen surgery.

I live in Bournemouth dorset and am 51, how old are you mell if you dont mind me asking

hi mike,
i have already been to the hospital and they only gave me one choice which was surgery & i refused so they discharged me.They said that the herbst wouldn't work, but i have got other orthodontists in america telling me that they do work. I am 24 and i want this sorting as soon as possible without resorting to surgery,it is really bad and it is depressing me because i have been bullied my whole life because of it and i don't like leaving the house.

I have been looking at your replies and am wondering what exactly happened and did you find out if the appliances work?
