Anchor Implants

#1 Post by lpgapro »

Hi!

I am having surgery Monday to implant anchors to attach my braces, which are going to also being put on Monday...Have you heard of this being done before. I understand the technique came out of Korea. I guess my worry is attaching the braces so soon after the anchors being implanted. What do you think? I imagine more pain than usual?

I understand that these type of implant anchors are quite small, not like the implants used under permanent crowns. So these probably dont have to integrate into the bone before they are used.

My daughter had these implants done and we have had the greatest results. She had a pretty severe open bite as a result of splint therapy for TMJD. The plan was a year to intrude the back molars using the implants as anchors to close the bite and a couple of years of braces to stabilize everything. In realty, it only took about 5 months to close the bite and she will probably be getting the braces off after a little more than a year.

You are right about the Korea connection. Our orthodontist is a former department chair from the dental school at Loyola-Chicago. One of his students (Korean) has been a leader in this technique. I did a lot of research on this and this appears to be becoming an accepted practice.

Anyway...as far as the actual procedure...don't worry, my daughter assures me it wasn't as bad as getting her wisdom teeth pulled. In fact, she opted for local anethesia instead of being knocked out because she wanted to go to a concert that night (kids!). Not sure if I would go that route, but I know she didn't need anything stronger than ibuprofen for pain.

I think we had about a week after the implants were put in before the ortho attached brackets to them. At no time was there anything more than achy discomfort.

Good luck...

Yes, The ones you have are not use for permanent crowns like I have on top .Mine will be used for 2nd molars if there is still room at the end of treatment.I had to wait 4 months for them to heal before being used as anchors.

Yes this technique came out of Korea .

As for pain..you feel nothing where the implant is so don't worry about that.

I might be getting what you have for the lower or reverse wire ..I'll find out on the 23rd.

Bluerain,
So you have the regular implants?
How long after braces were put on that you had the implants?
How are the temporary crowns holding up?
Will you have the permanent crowns after treatment?
What was it like, the drilling of implants into the jaw? :yikes:

I am like totally freaking out about having my two implants done.
I had nerve damage when my wisdom tooth was pulled on that side.
I had a horrible experience when they pulled my molar too, all that drilling was like a ...ok I wont go on.

I am totally....

Anybody want to volunteer holding my hand for this procedure????

Yes

How long after braces were put on that you had the implants?

Almost 4 months .Had to wait for bone growth around implant.I had no infections .

How are the temporary crowns holding up?

Implants are where the wisdom teeth use to be.
Well they aren't exactly crowns. We needed the room to pull back crowded teeth so they are very small.Small enough for a In-Ovation bracket to be put on..

Will you have the permanent crowns after treatment?

When all is said and done (Teeth Straight) if there's enough room back there we will put on permanent crowns which will be my 2nd molars (Last big teeth before wisdom )

What was it like, the drilling of implants into the jaw? :yikes:

They numbed me up pretty good so I didn't feel anything but having my mouth open that long my jaw was sore . Also my neck hurt from being leaned back so much as placing implants where the wisdom teeth use to be is not done normally. This is the upper jaw I'm talking about by the way.

They took xrays right after they were placed .They were placed perfectly .I had a student who was a established dentist already and was taking the implant course who only had 2 weeks left before leaving. The head ortho spoke to the head implant instructer and made sure I was to get the top of the class as the placement of implants in my case is not the norm.

I am like totally freaking out about having my two implants done.

Really no need to.You only hear the drill that's about it. Sore jaw after and maybe neck pain if it's on top.

I had nerve damage when my wisdom tooth was pulled on that side.

I' m sure they will be extra careful knowing this.

I had a horrible experience when they pulled my molar too, all that drilling was like a ...ok I wont go on.

The student who did my implants also pulled my teeth several months before , 2 wisdom and a molar. Again I had no problems. Maybe I'm lucky but it was smooth sailing. We had the implants placed a few weeks early because the student was leaving in 2 weeks .We were able to placed them a few weeks early because everything went so well ,bone growth and no infections.

I'm sure yours will be a breeze, really. Yours will placed in a much easier spot and it will be over before you know it. I spoke to othere's who had implants and everyone said they worried and got worked up for nothing.

Go here and ask questions.Alot of implant patients there. http://members5.boardhost.com/CosmeticDental/

LETS US KNOW HOW IT GOES!!!
