Finally getting braced!

#1 Post by Maria89 »

Hey! I am kind of new here, been reading posts and stores for a while. Really inspiring and i have learned alot about everythinh that have to do with braces. I am a 22 years old medical student, always been happy with my teeths despite my big overbite. My first dentist at age 18 told me i needed to undergo a jaw surgery first because my overbite were above the border line but at that time i was going abroad for my studies and surgery freaked me out. I never thought it would be a problem. Here i am 4 years later with tmj, bruxism and my teeth getting worn down because the bite is not ideal and i was forced to go to orthodont this time in poland and not my home country norway. This one didnt mention anything about surgery, just said i needeed 4 teeth extractions. 2 last back molars down and 4th premolars at top, so i am more freaked about having four healthy teeths pulled out, dealing with the empty spaces:/. Today i had my first appointment and got one teeth pulled out, painfree, no pain afterwards, been 5 hours now and just an odd feeling and jaw soreness! Next appointement is on monday, one more teeth pulled out and then braces on wednesday finally! Just want wednesday to come as soon as possible. I was wondering how long will i feel the empty spaces there? Will they disappear in 1-2 months or can it take more time? .

Maria89, Welcome to the board, and congrats on the start of your journey. I had to have some healthy teeth pulled to, so I know how your feel. I just had one pulled a couple of weeks ago without a lot of pain. Just needed a couple of pain pills and then Motrin worked just fine. My ortho just added a chain last Tuesday and the gap is already starting to close. So it will be over before you know it. Good luck to you on your journey and hope to see you around here :D

I just wished her welcome and told her that it could take a few months for the spaces to close

Ebony, So I tried to translate what you wrote just by figuring it out. I did pretty well, considering I speak only English! However, for those just dying to know what she really wrote...!! Google translate works pretty well (It's Norwegian).

So, Ebony...dentistry in Poland?? Cool!

Jem: that made me laugh

Kipepeo: So Norwegian can no longer be my secret language? 8)
Wow, you did it without using translate? That’s very good!
And yes, I do consider it but don’t know if I got the brain that is needed to become a dentist

Heei! Takk for velkomsten:D det var godt å se at det er flere norske her:D kan heller svare på inlegget på engelsk så alle som ser det forstår det:D :) Good to know that it close it some months, thank god it isnt so obvious as i thought it would be, got my other extraction today so now braces on wednesday.. Its strange how some choose to extract all teeths before braces and some orthodonts do it after putting the braces on.. Is it some logic behind that? I am gonna have my braces for one and a half year so they will be off before my graduation:D :D you should definatly go for dentistry here, its a really nice experience to study abroad. And its not soo hard!! You dont need so much brain just alot of efforts and hard work! Go for it;) If its one thing i like about poland right now its that i am having my braces so much more cheaper than it would cost me in norway! Norway is way tooooo expensive:/ you still have your braces on?

Hi Maria

Welcome to the great world of braces! I know you must be super excited and can not wait for Wednesday to come? I hope you are not in too much pain after your extractions!! I actually had my extractions done after my braces were on. My ortho just didn't put the wire on the bottom arch until after the extraction sites had healed for about three weeks. I just had the brackets on the bottom. I think it all depends on the ortho as to when they would extract. In my case at first there were going to be no extractions of my first bicuspids but when my ortho and I decided he was going to close gaps on both sides do my top arch where I had a molar pulled from each side pulling the bicuspids were going to help line everything up right. My other option was to get implants where my molars were pulled but they are like seven thousand dollars a piece and I would need two one on the right and one on the left and I do not have those funds so my ortho was like he could save me that money and just close up the gaps with braces!!! So I just think it depends on your case as to when they will extract. I look forward to following your journey along the way and can't wait to see pics on Wed. Good Luck!

Yes, I still have my braces on. If you read my blog “Can I do it” you will see the support you can get on this forum (and how wonderful some orthos are). I got this annoying dental phobia so getting where I am today has been a very long road (right guys?) but worth it

Good luck tomorrow! Let us know how it went. Which braces do you get? Lingual, clear, metal etc. :)

Hvor fra Norge er du fra om det er greit at jeg spør? En bergenser her :D

Thank you so much for your replies! I red your blog ebony, and i found it really inspiring and interesting!! I am really glad u took the right choice of getting braces. Nomatter how hard the road os, its the destination that counts;) thank god everything went well, getting braces on was a piece of cake, i guess the pain will come later..i just got on my top arch, next will be done after few months. I cant eat anything!! The ortho drilled the sides of the wire where the molars are and the gum there is so sore that it hurts when i eat. And it doesnt get any better when you have lactoseintolerance, gonna make some homemade ice cream soon:D i feel so strange while talking, feels like my mouth just pop out! Hahah!! Du er en bergenser ja;) jeg er fra oslo faktisk:)

I went for clear 3m braces on top. Lower i am just gonna have metal. Its impossible to see my lower teeth when i speak. I wanted totally clear ones but the ortho meant they wud stain very quick and those i have now is clear with traces of metals, she said theyre better and with my coke addiction i so hope they dont stain. How do u guys clean your teeths? I got a list with stuff i shud buy but the dentist shop were closed when i finished. Can you brush wid a regular toothbrush? Any specific toothpaste or mouthwash that are recommended..
