morning: brush with generic toothpaste and orthodontic V-brush/interproximal cleaner. rinse with soft mint mouthwash (it's such a pretty color). I'd like to get some PhosFlur though, flouridosis is the worst.

afternoon: if a particularly messy lunch, brush with no toothpaste (travel v-brush/interproximal cleaner) xylitol gum (that stuff is good, but I'm starting to get sick of it)

evening: same as morning, but sometimes with flossing in between. I don't use orthodontic threaders, just get all up on the mirror and thread it by hand.

Days I work:
I brush 2-3 minutes before going to work (I work at 3pm-11pm and because of that I'm not normally up early enough for breakfast/lunch or to go anywhere before work)...
After we eat dinner at work I brush. I'll occasionally brush after we have a snack at work - depends on how my mouth is feeling. And then I brush before I go to bed (all of the brushing is usually 2-3 minutes).
If I don't brush after I eat I'll have a quick look to make sure I don't have food sticking in my brackets somewhere.

Days I don't work:
Basically the same thing. I'll brush between 3 and 5 times a day depending on what I eat and if I'm actually leaving the house.

And I floss a couple of times a week. I do floss between a couple teeth more though because they have a bigger gap that food gets caught in.

As for brushing times: I heard that over brushing is just as much of a problem as under brushing. You could be irritating your gums more and you could be damaging your enamel if you're really going at it. Isn't there a point where you could brush for say 4 minutes or 20 minutes and your mouth wouldn't be any cleaner? Just like trying to clean a window. You could stand there and wipe it for an hour when just wiping it for 10 minutes does the same job?

Oh man, I admit it I hate flossing  but I will have to be diligent once I get the braces. I had a cavity once on the side of my tooth due to not flossing! Not cool, the dentist had to jam a wood splint thing in there just to get to it  At my last cleaning I had no cavities :D and was lectured on the flossing and brushing for 3 mins! So I stare at the clock for three mins and brush. W/braces I have a feeling I will not get the hit the snooze button so many times though :-Z
And from on Luci to another Lucy if you want to skip a meal to avoid hassle I don't blame you one bit! :-} My little sister also had many a filling due to decay caused by medication she was lucky enough that is was when she was a child though so it was all in her baby teeth but it happens and I don't think you are OCD...I for one will not eat during the day while I am working because I will not be brushing my teeth in the restrooms at work. Mouthwash maybe but no one should have to look at my dental hygiene routine.

It will all be worth it in the end!

After every meal I brush with the regular and the spiral brush. When I eat something sweet I take more time to brush. At night I also floss. I use Mouthwash mornings and evenings.

Hi
Goodness me, I think if I spent 30 minutes brushing my teeth I'd get repetitive strain injury!!!

I brush my teeth when I wake up, after every meal and before bed, but for about 2 minutes at a time with my Oral B advance power thingy, I sometimes use the skinny toothbrush to get round the brackets but not always, and I usually swish around afterwards with some listerine. If I'm out and can't get to clean my teeth I just pick at visible bits of food with an interdental toothbrush which I carry round, and clean them as soon as I possbily can.

I am also having my teeth cleaned by my hygienist every 3 months instead of 6, just while the braces are on, I'm finding this really really helpful, not only does she get rid of any plaque, tartar etc but any staining that builds up on my teeth (I'm a black coffee/red wine girl) goes as well. It's worth an extra £30 a vist for that really.

So far, my dentist and ortho say that my teeth are fine and clean enough.

Don't brush too much either - you can actually wear off your tooth enamel, or so I've heard!!!

Morning - Brush my teeth twice using normal toothbrush. I only brush my teeth after breakfast.

Noon - Brush my teeth once using normal toothbrush. If i don't take my lunch, if not i will brush.

Nite - Same as what i did in the morning.

Qns:
1. Are there anything i can do to prevent flouridosis? I've read that some people had flouridosis after then remove their braces and i would really like to prevent it.

2. Is flossing a must? What does it help and prevent? I don't have a habit to floss my teeth since young.

3. I'm looking at eletric toothbrush and i think the circular movement of it's brush can really clean those brackets and spaces within. Anyone here using eletrical toothbrush? Any good recommendations?

[quote=I guess I'm abnormal and proud, but still with decay!! (Wouldn't you guys go mad too if you still got decay DESPITE a lengthy cleaning routine?)

LUCY xxx[/quote]

You are very dedicated, Lucy :D Perhaps your problem is that since you have such a detailed cleaning routine, you may have begun wearing away your enamel. I had a friend who this happened to. I personally think that you are amazing for spending so much time on a beautiful smile!

Morning: Brush with Sonicare toothbrush. It's pretty nifty and has a special timer so the toothbrush stops and then starts again immediately to let you know to move to the next tooth quadrant

During the day: I swish vigorously after eating anything. I have had braces less than a week - I don't know if this may change?

Night: Night is where I actually have some time! I floss first (I was just able to start flossing last night and it felt soooo good!!) Then I use the interdental brush and really spend some time on each individual bracket. Then I brush with the Sonicare.

I try to spend a great deal of time on my teeth at night. I believe that my ortho grades you on your oral hygiene with each visit, so I'll let you know on my first adjustment (01/11) how I did!

:? Uhh... I'm not seeing where you explained HOW you brush your teeth... I just see you going off on everyone who questions your routine. I UNDERSTAND about the whole meds thing. I was just wondering (wondering-I was NOT critisizing!!!) how you brush your teeth for that long and like if you use a whole bunch of toothpaste or something. Geez! Nevermind then...

So far I only have had upper braces since June 19.
On my last visit for a cleaning my hygenist recommended that I not brush
with toothpaste, but brush with Listerine instead.
But still use the Prevident gel before going to sleep.
I see my Ortho next week, so I will check him anyway.
I have to say though my mouth feels cleaner

Anyone else get that advice?

I brush in the morning
rinse or swish in between meals and snacks
if its something h, is horribly irritating before bed, I get my water pik
in the evening i use the interplak brush, thorough waterpik with a combination of peroxide, water and my mouthwash and brushing

Saves me a huge amount of time in the morning by doing my extreme routine before bedtime
