My journey starts

#1 Post by SpottieDottie »

Hi everyone
Just a quick hello as I've just joined and am starting my quest to get better teeth. I'm 35 and have always hated my teeth - I have a big overjet and crowding on the top which I'm hoping will be improved with braces. I had some ortho treatment as a teenager but it was pretty medieval and didn't really help.
So, the plan is to have my upper premolars removed (had the first side out yesterday and the second in Jan) the ceramic braces fixed to the top arch only later in Jan.
At the mo I'm not so bothered about the brace but not liking the extractions though it wasn't as bad as I feared but sore now.
I should be braced for about 18months but am getting married in July so will have it removed for that then put back on - I hope my extraction holes will have improved by then!

Welcome! Congratulations on starting your journey and congratulations on your wedding too! I too had braces as a teenager and find myself back in braces again - a bit of a time warp. I have had ceramics on my upper jaw since Nov. 22nd and will also get them on my lower jaw sometime in the future. I had my wisdom teeth and a premolar removed before getting braces and I healed quickly and almost painlessly. Hope it is the same for you.

Hi! Welcome to the board and congratulations on getting married soon :)

I'm 34 and have had mine on now for a month also (Ciara and I were braced on the same day  )

I too had an extraction of a pre-molar however mine was a baby tooth. I've been told my gap won't be closed however (due in part to not having enough teeth and it would bring my molars around too far to the front to be comfortable when I bite).

Good luck with getting braced :)

Hi all
Thanks for the 'hellos' and encouragement :-D
So, I have my brace date now - Feb 8th. I'm a bit disappointed as it's not as soon as I'd hoped - it was originally 11th Jan (I'm keen to get as much benefit from my braces before my wedding in early July) but my dentist is only taking out one premolar at a time and the second one is due for extraction 8th Jan. Unfortunately my ortho insisted I push my brace date back to the next available appointment (8th Feb!) to allow the extraction hole to heal, boo. I really hope 5 months will be enough time to allow the extraction holes to close up before my wedding in July, fingers crossed! Otherwise I'm gonna look like some crazy old tramp lady in my wedding pics with only 4 teeth at the front :-(

You will probably find by July that your front 6 teeth have moved a lot and that you will have a pretty good smile for your wedding. The gaps may not have closed completely by then but I doubt they will be noticeable in photos.

Good luck with your braces and all the best for your wedding.

Jem
Sectional brace with Damon clear brackets fitted to front 6 upper teeth 3 January 2012
Brackets added to premolars 2 April 2012
Estimated treatment time originally 6-9 months
. Brace removed on 22 July 2013 after 18 months and 19 days
Now enjoying bonded upper retainer plus part time essix/hawley( I have both)

Thanks Jem, I hope you're right. Honestly, any improvement by my wedding would be great, as I currently hate smiling in photos. I guess I just have to deal with my teeth looking worse in the short term until things start to straighten out and the gaps close up :-)

You will be amazed at how quickly your teeth move. I've been braced up for just over three weeks now, and I have rather crowded teeth, especially on the top row. I had one of my molars removed to make space, and already the gap has closed a bit! (I kept the tooth to check the difference.... Sad I know, but on the plus side just over a milimetre). In addition, my teeth have straightened quite a bit. As well as the fastidious brushing, and constant mouth wash, teeth have never been whiter. You really will notice the difference really quick.

Congratulations with the wedding, you are going to smile with confidence like you've never smiled before! Xxx

Sounds like you're treatment is going well, Tingrinteacher, you must be pleased to see changes so quickly. I hope I'll be the same! Love that you kept your tooth to check measure the extraction gap - I might have to copy that one! I did have a look at my first tooth that's been removed and was surprised to see such a small tooth on the dentists tray - the hole feels humongous :-D

Good luck with your treatment too, upperceramics - we'll have to keep each other posted and compare progress - very exciting!
