Has any one had their Orthodontist take out wire for a month
Hey There,
So I've had braces for about 2-3 years now. Apparently I'm close to finishing up my treatment. Been wearing elastics too for the past 2 years. When I went to see my ortho today for a standard monthly checkup and adjustment etc. He said he would be taking out the top and bottom wire for a month to let the teeth settle and go from there. I tried to ask him why I forgot what he said but said it happens sometimes and you need to do it.
Has anyone had this happen before where their ortho took out the wires for 6-8 weeks as part of the treatment and you pretty much just had brackets on with no elastics?
Whats the purpose of this lol.
I know I should have asked him all this but I usually don't ask that many questions at the office cause he always seems rushed.

They will do it to punish people who don't take care of their teeth brush or floss. Unless of course the patient has a cleaning scheduled between that appointment and and the next adjustment.

I don't know they would remove the wires for 6-8 weeks, but it is no different than being debanded and not getting a retainer for 6-8 weeks. I would expect teeth to shift, and probably not in a good way.
Do you know if he will put wire lacing on to keep things from shifting?
So do you have wires now? If so, I'd call the office and ask. Was he referring to your next visit? Then just ask then.

Not sure if the 2nd poster was making a joke or not lol? If he wasn't I dunno if thats true my teeth are very clean and I floss regularly.
In regards to the Kip, I also think that my teeth may shift but I'm not 100% sure why that was part of the treatment, if he wanted them to shift a certain way I would imagine he would just bend the wire or whatever but this time around he just completely took out the top and bottom wire and all i have on my teeth now are the brackets with individual ligatures on them. No wire on top or bottom and he said no elastics for this 6 weeks. The dental assistant said its normal and they do that sometimes for patients.
I was just wondering how "normal" it was and if anyone who had braces ever had a month go by where they didn't have the wires in at all somewhere close to the end of their treatment.

I can't say I've heard of taking the wire off like that.
My orthodontist took my power chain off this time to "give my teeth a rest" before they go back on next visit. I wonder if it is a similar concept for yours since you have had your braces for so long???

Maybe! Oh well!
Re: Has any one had their Orthodontist take out wire for a m
Not oh well. If it were me, I'd call and ask about possible shifting and to explain the reasoning for removing the wires. I wouldn't settle for "we have to do that sometimes". And I assume the ligatures are just for comfort?

you make a good point I'll call and ask on Monday

Did you ever get an explanation from your ortho?
