I moved my "installation" date up a week. Am I crazy?
So, after too many decades of needing braces and wanting the PERFECT smile, I decided to suck it up and take the plunge. Originally thought I'd schedule my appointment after my birthday so I could enjoy any treats that may come my way. Today I decided to re-schedule the appointment. SO, tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 10 am I'll be sitting in my ortho's office visualizing my perfect smile. I'll be in braces for my birthday, but what better gift to give myself than a beautiful smile and a healthy mouth.
Although I was a candidate for Invisilign, I opted for traditional braces (I'm diligent and organized, but don't want to keep up with trays and aligners). Yesterday my dentist suggested I consider ceramic, so we'll see what the ortho says. I guess it's not uncommon for ceramic on top and full metal jacket on bottom.
The upside is I won't require extractions as I have a lot of room in my jaws (a nice way of saying I have a big mouth). I have a cross-bite, overbite and crowding. I'll be the mom wearing rubber-bands and praying I don't pop someone in the eye at my kids' sporting events (hahah).
Thanks to this board, I've learned a lot about what to expect.
Anyway, I'm prepared and excited to do something good for ME (for a change). I'll file my reports and post pics...pinky promise.

Yay!! Congrats I don't think it's a bad decision at all! There really is no "good" time to get braces on. I got mine on in November which means I'll have them for 2 Christmas's. I worked out that if I'd gotten them in say..January I only would have had them on for 1, but in the end, it doesn't matter because I know when I'm on the other side it will have gone quickly.
If it makes you feel any better I'm having an adjustment in a couple of weeks at 8 in the morning on the day of my wedding anniversary Great time I picked for that one
Do update once you're all braced

Congratulations! It is exciting to be starting this journey. I got mine on in November so I had Christmas and New with them. it wasn't back at all and I kind of considered it my Christmas present to myself.
Happy Birthday too! My birthday is also next week.

Welcome Sparkly. I too decided to have mine put on before a big event....my 30th high school reunion. While I got through the weekend events just fine, it would have been much easier for me if I had waited. But to wait would have meant an additional 3 week delay. I just wanted to get started so I could get finished. I'm glad I am where I am today and not 3 weeks ago!!
And don't worry about pooping people with elastics. It doesn't happen...unintentionally. They are pretty neat to shoot. They have about a 6' range.

Re: I moved my "installation" date up a week. Am I crazy?
I made it! The installation went smooth and I'm not gripping my jaws in pain or rolling around the floor. I went with ceramics and am happy with that decision...they're really discreet and barely visible from a distance..just a little sparkle. No rubber bands - yet. She said in about a year (darn it, I was looking forward to snapping the serial "chatter"). I will need spacers but need to return in a few weeks for those...and an appliance.
An appliance?! My head swung around when I heard that! What the blazes?! Seems that my stint as a kindergarten thumb-sucker caught up with me. Well, that and the blasted cross-bite. Anyway, I have a feeling that the next visit is gonna be a doozy-whopper. Spacers, appliance to spread my mouth and keep my tongue where it belongs (waaay behind my teeth)...oh well, it could be a LOT worse and I'm keeping my eyes on the prize.
After all the work was done, I was hungry. I avoided the urge to grab a delicious Costco hot dog (too many prying eyes and too far to bring it home to eat in solitude). I opted for McDonald's instead. On the way home I tried a french fry and it felt like I was chewing sand. The chicken sandwich was do-able, but by the time I was done, it felt like I had a mouth full of gummy play-doh. I think I see a change of eating habits in my future.
My family was very suppportive and rushed to give their opinions/feedback. My 8 year old daughter was disappointed that I didn't have rubber bands but was glad my mouth didn't hurt too much. My 6 year old son misses my smooth teeth. My husband is impressed that they're so discreet.
We're going out for dinner. I chose mexican since I know I can choose something soft. I miss the chips already. Tomorrow's SuperBowl Sunday...I'm sure I'll get chuckles as I eat the hot wings with a fork. Good think I stocked up on the little between the braces brushes.
Thanks to those who reminded me that I'm not crazy to get started sooner than later!
I guess now I really am "sparkly" lol

Haha, I hate auto correct. Just noticed my misspelling in my post above. Yikes. Too late to edit.

I don't think you are crazy at all .. I have my appointment wednesday for the ortho to line out the plan and i am quite anxious about it! if I could move it up a minute sooner i probably would. I have used this site so much over the last 2 weeks researching and reading and just finding out what i might be in for .. but it isn't the same as knowing what i will be in for! I am reassured that there are so many on here to help me through this new phase of my life adventure .. being 40 I just wasn't sure that it was the right choice for me but after reading this board .. I know it is! good luck and i hope your superbowl sunday chicken wings with a fork is awesome!

You will be glad you did it in the end! It may only be a week but it can make a huge difference.
Good luck with your fitting.

Not crazy at all! I just decided I'm going to do it too and I wish they were on like... now! Less thinking about the process, more doing the process. So what's the pain like? ekk

No crazy, I kept moving my date till my girlfriend and father finally encouraged me to go in for the appointment and get the ball rolling on the process. First day in braces and so happy for it!
