Sleeping with braces
Now that I am getting braces in two weeks, it has got me thinking of all these different things. I sleep on my side and on my stomach some... is that going to make the braces dig into my cheek? I might not out that much pressure on my mouth area... maybe just on the side of my head but who knows. Anyone fnd this happened when they slept or am I just thinking nonsense?
I do also fnd myself in the "mouth resting on fist" position alot during the day... that's gonna have to change.

Re: Sleeping with braces
I still manage to rest my cheek on my fist just fine although it does occasionally get uncomfortable. I'm also a side sleeper. It takes a bit more adjusting than it used to to get comfy and there are times where I wake up and a couple of brackets are really digging in but most of the time it's fine.
One thing no one seems to tell you about braces is that when you wake up in the morning your whole inner cheeks and lips are stuck to the brackets and you sort of have to peel them off (or puff up your cheeks to get them off). It's lov-er-ly

Re: Sleeping with braces
I was worried about that too but I can sleep in any position and by braces have caused no problems.
Re: Sleeping with braces
I don't have problems sleeping...it's the first 2 minutes of waking up that is uncomfortable. Not painful...just slightly uncomfortable. My mouth creates some kind of vacuum and my lips are sealed to my braces. Once I un-stick each bracket, I'm better.
I don't think I would change my sleeping pattern for this-I'm OK with waking up to a vac sealed mouth-plus, I see that it will probably get better.
Good luck!

I get the same thing, I just didn't really know how to describe it. I get really dehydrated at night and my mouth makes a suction so when I wake up my braces are stuck to my bottom inner lip and leave little intends. It's a bit painful unit I rehydrate.jaybea20 wrote:I don't have problems sleeping...it's the first 2 minutes of waking up that is uncomfortable. Not painful...just slightly uncomfortable. Thanks for the posts. That's so weird about the vacuum thing!
Re: Sleeping with braces
I haven't had any problems with sleeping in different positions. My challenge in sleeping has been as my bite has changed I've had varying degrees of bruxing issues since my subconscious seems to want to go back to my old "normal".

So glad the vacuum thing isn't just me!
Re: Sleeping with braces
I had trouble sleeping in the beginning because of the braces digging in. I had dry mouth at night time and the braces would stick to the insides of my mouth and the digging in of brackets would make me wake up in agony. Most of the time the pain left as soon as I moved my head, unstuck my mouth and had a drink. Sometimes it would causing a chafing that left my mouth a bit raw which was unlpeasant. Once my mouth toughened up a bit and the dry mouth stopped it was no longer a problem.
If you find yourself having similar problems there are plenty of dry mouth washes and gels and you can use wax to help protect your cheeks.

Me, too.
As for bruxing (grinding) I used to grind horribly. It was so bad I'd wake myself up with the noise. My teeth could not close in their natural position because my canines conflicted. My lowers would slide along the backs of my uppers, forcing my lower jaw to seat 5mm behind where it was supposed to. It was uncomfortable, so I would grind and clench. Also, my airway was narrowed because of my jaw placement. That made me snore. There were a few times I woke up feeling like I was choking.
All of these issues have been largely resolved by aligning my teeth so the jaw can seat squarely where it's supposed to.
Discomfort, yes. But you'll get used to it. I blow my lips and cheeks like a puffer fish every morning.

Sleeping has been great; it's being awake that bugs me....
Re: Sleeping with braces
Sleeping hasn't been an issue. Just no matter how well I clean at night, when I wake up It feels like I just ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. My teeth taste like all sorts of crud stuck on them.

I do the pufferfish routine every morning too. I am a side sleeper. What I notice is that I clench my teeth and I am now biting new areas of my mouth. That is the part that sucks waking up from the pain of biting new areas. Oh well this will resolve itself sooner or later.
Re: Sleeping with braces
Hilarious about the vacuum description! I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've had to peel my bottom lip off of my brackets so many times.
I also sleep on my side and the only real problems I've had with the braces are the "vacuum" and severe dry mouth when I wake up in the morning because my mouth does not close around the braces without conscious effort.

Re: Sleeping with braces
Sleeping on my back. Best position for your back.. Do have problem with keeping lips sealed during night so i do get dry mouth in the morning several times.
