I want my dainty white archwire back.

#1 Post by 2XRound »

For my entire first month in braces with clear brackets and a white archwire no one has noticed them and I have loved it. Further I have experienced only minamal tooth pain; the only problems have been the hasssel of wearing braces and my mouth. Yesterday I had my first adjustmentand in addition to additional molar build up and 4 cute little Zebra elastics I was fitted with bright glistening steel archwires. All my teeth ache and I have had more people comment on my braced face in the last 24 hours than in the prior month. These new archwires look like chrome bumpers on a car against my white teeth. the worst part is that I didn't know what was happening till the wires were crammed into my brackets and tied down. ( I elected wire ties to avoid the coffey problem). I so liked the asthetic look of my braces and hate getting asked questioons like : "poor thing didn't you just have braces-yes 5 years ago"; "how long wil you have to wear those things--18 months"; " do they hurt-yes thank you"; how can you eat with all that stuff in your mouth-- its hard"; "did you consider Invisalign--yes but I am not a candidate for them"; etc. I want to crawl under a rock. All this in one day for the losss of my white archwire.

Awww :( That sucks. Hopefully you'll come to stand the new wires.

I do feel you on the Invisalign question though - grrrr! Not everyone can get them and I'm not even sure that I *would* have if I could have!

6 weeks, still zero comments. A few mesmerized stares, but I can handle that. Y'all need to relocate to the upper Midwest for however long you are in braces. The natives truly are reticent. Problem is you could be on fire and they might not say anything unless they are acquainted with your mother.

I'm sorry you're miserable :(

I was under the impression the white wires can only be used initially. Once you need stronger wires you have to go into the silver coloured one's.

Honestly though, I've always had silver wires and this month have 2 extra silver hooks attached to it and have still had most people not notice my braces nor make comments. I can't believe people think it's okay to comment!

I was actually a candidate for invisalign but decided they weren't for me. I don't think invisalign are any better than braces. They have their own issues and problems.

Try to ignore the comments (but I second the moving thing ;))

Sure, come on over! Just bring your fall, winter and spring coats. Hmm... I wonder what it will be like to have metal braces when it's 35 below. At least they wont crack.

Hi 2X Round,

I sympathize with how you are feeling. My first 3 wires were white coated ( starter wire, thicker wire, back to starter wire after having additional brackets placed) so I had a fairly discreet brace for my first 19 weeks and few people noticed. That helped a lot with my initial self-consciousness.

At my 3rd adjustment my ortho said she was giving me a Damon wire which I think was her gentle way of saying it was silver coloured. It was more noticeable and I did get asked about my brace by a couple of people who had not previously noticed it. So I became self-conscious about it again. But I had not seen any serious movement until that wire ( plus powerchain), so I became happy with it and have been OK with silver coloured wires ever since. They are a bit more noticeable, but braces with clear brackets are still pretty discreet and you get to the stage where you are not bothered anyway.

Good luck with your treatment

Jem
Sectional brace with Damon clear brackets fitted to front 6 upper teeth 3 January 2012
Brackets added to premolars 2 April 2012
Estimated treatment time originally 6-9 months
. Brace removed on 22 July 2013 after 18 months and 19 days
Now enjoying bonded upper retainer plus part time essix/hawley( I have both)

Jem: thanks for your comments. I guess when the pain subsides and I get a good night's sleep I will adjust better to my new reality. Add one more snarky comment from my office last night: "Oh I see why you look like you are pouting." Well, we have got that behind us now.

Ooo how do the grey ligs look? I've been tempted, particularly now I'm wearing a powerchain to ask for the grey. I don't mind if you can see it as long as it doesn't look like a neon sign inside my mouth.

I know, Mrs. C! I'm right next-door and I can't remember this much snow this late. Is this good for maple syrup or something? I love me some maple syrup on pancakes. Thoughts always turn to food these days...

I called and managed to speak with the ortho himself and explained to him my distress with what he had done to my discrete look ( which by the way we had discusssed at my first meeting with him) :yuck: .He said that because my new wire has some "posts" on it he can't get a satisfactory white one. The posts are mouth stabbing vertical things that look like fangs which he has hooked my elastics to.

why do people make comments like that! I often just get people staring at my mouth and then kinda wish they would just say "oh you have braces" but comments like "ooooo so that is why you look like your pouting" that is just mean. Just ignore them and I bet the person who said that has yukky teeth and yours will be beautiful and straight soon and then you can just show them off to the world!
