Well I have 8 spacers now! I just got them an hour ago so its not really bad. I've forgotten about the ones on my upper arch but the lower ones are harder to forget. I was told that I'll really feel them in 4-6 hours so I should get myself prepared.
The bad part is that even though I don't get the lower braces for a month or two I'll get the molar bands on Tuesday with cleats. All my molar bands will have cleats Oh well hopefully it will all be good in the end! The ortho was a little less upbeat about what the outcome will be but I figure at least my bite will be better than it currently is and I get to keep all my teeth. YEAH!!!

Those cleats suck at the beginning. See if they'll fill them in with some bracket cement.
I hadn't read your story until now. Our cases are very similar! Interesting that yours turned out the same as mine Don't worry too much about the braces. Be glad that you went for metal, because the clear ligs on my ceramics stain and look gross (to me) pretty quick. If only I could get myself off the black tea... Now that I'm almost to the end, I kind of wish I'd gone with metal all around, but at the same time I've really enjoyed the descretness of the ceramics. Even when stained they're still not as noticable as metal, and they only look gross to me.
On the topic of what people will say/how they'll react, my boyfriend gave me the best advice when I was complaining about how my ligs were stained. He said "Who cares? They're just braces." Simple words, but they made me feel way better. Seriously, who will care? If they do, they're likely secretly jealous. The only person who said something negative to me could stand a little orthodontia work himself.
And finally, on the topic of do I regret Invisalign and not going straight to braces. I think I said this in my story, but I know I would have never had my teeth fixed had it not been for invisalign. Seems like an expensive set of training wheels, but well worth it to me. Yes, I wish I had the self confidence back then to just skip Invisalign, but I didn't and would have never taken the first step if not for Invisalign.
Well good luck with your first day in braces!

Hi rooroo
It is soooo nice to "know" someone else in the same boat! Being able to read your story really helped me to decide what was in my best interest. After a few weeks of contemplation I realized that braces will probably really only bother me. It's weird but its like I was thinking by getting braces people would just see the braces and not me anymore. Kind-of crazy. I mean I'm still me and when people first meet me after Tuesday they'll just be like "oh she has braces" and then not even think of them again. It's weird but I was thinking about a guy I know that is missing his 4 front teeth and when I first met him I was like "wow he's missing his four front teeth" and now I'm just like that so-and-so and don't think about the teeth thing.
Like you Invisalign were my training wheels, I just wish Invisalign would openly tell people that you might get good looking results but your bite will be all messed up. At least then it wouldn't be a surprise. I looked over all my paperwork again and they mention nothing about bite issues after treatment. Even had they warned me I probably still would of done it but I would of thought harder and had more realistic expectations.
I was in my old orthos office this week to get copies of my xrays and such and a lady walked in who was there to have an Invisalign consultation. I wanted to tell her everything but instead bit my tongue, wished her luck, and told her about this site. What more can I do?

Day 3 with spacers:
Well I have to admit I've been lucky and have had minimal discomfort with the spacers. The only time its sore is when I eat. It hasn't stopped me from eating anything although its worse in the morning so I do have to take it easy at breakfast.
I did have a mini-pity party the night I got the spacers. I realized as I went to floss my teeth before bed that obviously I couldn't floss some teeth and one of those teeth happened to be my implant. One side of the implant has a spacer so I couldn't floss that side and it kind-of pushed me over the edge. I'm nerotic about flossing the implant (do so after every meal) so not being able to was a big deal for me. I guess also the fact that my treatment is now longer than originally planned and the lower braces will go on much sooner than originally planned were also bugging me. I'm cool with it all now probably just had to get it out of my system. For a few minutes though I did question if I really wanted to do all this.
As for my treatment it is now scheduled to take 18 months (up from 15). On Tuesday they'll place braces on the upper arch and then in a few months the lower ones will go on. I was hoping that the lowers wouldn't go on until like month 7 but because they don't want the lowers to flare I can't have elastics till I have a rectangular wire in both arches which will take awhile to get to. The ortho is hoping (as do I!!!) that my upper arch will have changed enough so that when the lower braces go on I don't need a bite plate or anything. There is no headgear or expanders in my future but it sounds like I'll get a lot of elastics!!! Thankfully none of them will be in the front so it should be fairly descrete. I'm bummed about the increased treatment time since when they were saying 15 months I was expecting 18, so now its like is 24 months a more realistic time?? I'd hate to be in braces for as long as I was in Invisalign!!! Hopefully my teeth will respond really well so 18 months will be on target. Guess I just wait and see.
I've included the series of pictures from before Invisalign so one can get an idea of where I was before everything. When I go in on Tuesday I want to borrow the latest set of pictures so everyone can compare the before Invisalign and after Invisalign.

Hi rooroo and anyone else who was waiting for an update
Well I apoligize for not posting right away. I had to put my 14 yr old dog, Driscoll, down yesterday morning (not planned for obviously) so I've been kind-of off track. I did get my braces but it was one wild and crazy experience!!!!
To start the story since I was an absolute mess one hour before the app. time (just gotten home from the vet) , I called the office explained the situation and asked when I could get in if I rescheduled. Well turns out it would be a whole week (I was hoping maybe the next day or just later that day) so they said I should see how I was doing in an hour and let them know what I decide. After thinking about it I decided that I had been so looking forward to this day and that Driscoll would of not wanted me to miss it grieving him (if he could have that sort of thought ) So after calling my best friend to tell her what happened, I pulled myself together the best I could, inhaled a banana, and drove like a maniac to the office.
Well when I got there the receptionist was really nice and understanding and mentioned that it hadn't been a good day at there office either and she'd been crying already that day also. She mentioned that they were short 2 assistants (they only have 3) and that the ortho was currently missing. So it just so happened that the 3rd assistant was in the middle of doing molds so the receptionist seats me and starts to prep the teeth. I was kind-of freaking out because : 1) I was really questioning if I wanted to do this and 2) At the old ortho office the roles were well defined, receptionists answered phones, assistants worked on patients and the two never switched! Well the ortho shows up once the "assistant" finished and when I got back to the chair from rinsing I noticed there were only 4 braces on the little braces sheet. I questioned the "assistant" and she didn't know so she asked the ortho, and the ortho said that it was incorrect (they had set up as if I was only doing the upper arch and not the whole sheybang like I had agreed to in writing). So this just racked up my anxiety since they didn't know what they were even going to do to me (o.k. well the ortho knew). I was really questioning my decision at this point and was wondering if I'd chosen the wrong office to complete treatment! Once the ortho stepped up she took control of the situation, filed off the Invisalign speedbump (awful smell) and started to prep all the teeth. They got the molar bands on (it became obvious to me at this time that they train the staff to fill multiple roles cause the "assistant" knew exactly what to do) and I was surprised to learn I was only getting 4 and not 8. Given were they put the spacers I was expecting more but they ended up banding the 1st molars and left the 2nds natural (YEAH!!!)
The actual installation was really quick and I could tell the ortho was taking her job seriously which allowed me to relax. She was really nice and put ligs on the cleats so they wouldn't bother me as much and bent the hooks on the brackets in so it would cause less discomfort. During this time the ortho kept asking questions of the others regarding a particular assistant (did so-and-so teach you how to do x, so-and-so told me where we keep y but I'm not finding it). So I started to thinking that so-and-so quit (she'd been with the practice for 26 years and my ortho had only been there 2) which caused the upheavel and maybe the 2nd assistant was so distraught she had to leave also? Or maybe it was like a workers strike! Once they got the braces on, the 3rd assistant took over so I asked her if someone quit and she said yes. Anyway as for the important techie stuff I got bubblegum colored ligs with a dark pink powerchain (they didn't have powerchains in the bubblegum color ) from my 1st bicuspid to my 2nd molar on both sides with a 16 weight/inch/?? wire. When I was checking out the receptionist asked me what I thought (they hadn't handed me a mirror in the back so I had no idea what it looked like with ligs, wire, and powerchain) and I mentioned that I was scared that people were all of the sudden quiting. She reassured me all was well and it was just a bad day for them also and not normal.
My first impression of my new mouth situation once I got a look in the car was "o.k. its not bad" although I was a little disappointed that my powerchain and ligs didn't match. Next time I will make sure to get a matching set. It felt weird but I wasn't experincing any pressure or anything so that was good. I went home and did my thing and later that afternoon I got a call from the ortho. She asked how I was and how the pain was and when I told her I had none and had more using Invisalign she was floored! She kept saying that most people really start to feel it 4-6 hours after installation and I was past that mark. The funny thing was she exclamed "Gee I even used powerchains and people always really feel that!!!" She also said she wanted to reassure me that I was going to get the best of care in her office since the receptionist told her what I had said. She told me more about the situation (turns out assitant #2 was out for other reasons and might have to leave because of it) and was really sorry I had to experience it on top of what I was already dealing with. We talked about Driscoll a little (she started crying) and when I told her I was really happy with the office and that she didn't need to call, she told me that she always calls patients the day she installs braces, which I thought was a nice thing to do.
Fast forward 24 hours, and I'm still in almost no discomfort. Brushing last night was a major pain and I stabbed myself doing so but otherwise no big to do. My front teeth have already moved up a little and my right lateral incisor has come down a little. Those teeth are a little sensitive but nothing bad. This afternoon once my right cheek got attacked for the 10th time today I took a look to see what had done it and low-and-behold I had wire sticking out through the buccal band. I checked the left side and it was the same situation although it wasn't bothering me. I knew it had been flush with the buccal tube before so I called the office and they told me to come right in. I couldn't believe I already had to get the wire cut!! When I came in, the assistant who put on the wire mentioned to the other assistant that she had probably cut the wire to short yesterday so she didn't crank (???) the wire. The ortho came over to see what was happening and checked that the midline hadn't changed. Right before I left the ortho gave me a sticky note and said that it was her home number and to call anytime I had a problem or anything. She mentioned that in the fall her ortho study group would start rotating being on call for each other but should I have a problem when my old ortho is covering for her I should just call her. What service!!!! Any doubts I had about this office has disappeared.
All in all, braces really haven't been bad. I keep waiting for the pain since I'm sure I won't go without but it is funny that the powerchains aren't bothering me at all. Eating is a major hassle cause when I eat my tongue does get attacked by the cleats but with everything going on I haven't been too hungry. Food, of course, hides when I'm brushing so it takes so long to finish the job since particles will keep popping up. I've had times already that I've forgotten the braces are on, so although I haven't used wax yet I think I will tonight since my right cheek is sore from being attacked by the wire. At least now I know what I stabbed my finger on!! I do have pictures which I'll try to load soon and probably by then I'll finally be feeling more pain. Guess we'll all find out!!
Anyway thanks for letting me share !

Sorry about Driscoll. It always stinks when you have to put a pet down. But glad to hear your installation experience wasn't bad besides drama in the office. I didn't notice my braces much at first either. Mostly just trying to get used to where my upper lip should sit. Any lisping? Most people who get braces say they lisp for a week but I had none, though when I started Invisalign I had some.
Thanks for sharing your story! I can't wait to here more!

woah invisagirl, what a day that was for you.
I have a little dog of my own, and I'm not sure how I will cope when the day evitably comes.
Hats off to you for being so brave, toughing out the long treatment time and the dramatic escapades.

Thanks everybody for your kind words regarding Driscoll. He was a great dog who will be missed by many. Thankfully my other dog Cameron has helped me a great deal and we're healing together.
Well I have rejoined the land of the living, or so it feels. I had an expo this weekend for my side business so I've spent the last few days being consumed by it. I spent the whole weekend talking and I have the sores to prove it. Its bearable but my tongue hurts from the cleats and my upper lip is sooo sore. As long as I keep using chapstick I'm o.k. but the last few nights my lips get so dry and sore while I'm going through my teeth cleaning regiment I keep having to stop and apply some. Its crazy but I know its temporary. Last night was the first night I didn't put wax on the buccal tubes before going to bed so that area is healing. I've been trying not to use wax cause I want things to toughen up but I figured if I used wax while sleeping maybe it would decrease my healing time.
As for eating its been an interesting adventure. Seems my teeth take a vote every 12 hours on who will be sore so depending on whose a little sore determines how I eat. I've pretty much been able to eat most of what I usually do since I eat a lot of pasta anyway but there have been somenights where a certain tooth will hurt and my tongue will be sore and I just have mashed potatoes because its not worth it. I stocked the house with plenty of soft foods and other than the mashed potatoes I haven't really needed them. I do have to say that I've had to stay away from my SonicCare toothbrush cause it's just too unpleasant. Other than that it hasn't been bad.
So all in all its gone decently so far. I've had no lisping which has been so nice. Its funny though because I'm so used to wearing Invisalign I find myself thinking I need to take the aligners out before eating and at times I catch myself wanting to use my bottom teeth to push the aligner up. Guess after 2.6 years the habits are kind-of ingrained. With Invisalign I got so used to saying no to people if they wanted to share some food with me, and now I'll say no and it will dawn on me that I can have some if I want. Funny, wonder how long it will take to break those habits?
Anyway that's all I have for now. I stare at my teeth all the time but I haven't noticed any changes except for the front teeth. Its kind of reassuring that a tooth will be a little sore every now and then cause its the only sign I get that things are moving. Overall though braces have been much less painful than Invisalign. Go figure!!!!

I can't believe its been 12 days since I got my braces!!! In some ways it doesn't feel that long and in other ways it feels longer. Guess that's just the way it goes.
Well my teeth have definetly settled down because I can pretty much eat whatever I want these days. I've even gotten brave and eaten breadsticks filled with cheese!! I do have a back molar which started aching today which I hope is braces related pain and not a cavity. I'm so prone to cavities that I freak out at the slighest pain. The pain is already starting to subside so I think its braces related (I hope). Its weird but since things have settled down I wish my first adjustment wasn't so far away. Its like if things aren't sore then how do I know the wire is still working?!? I know it is but I guess I'm used to having pressure more often with Invisalign so its like no pain equals no gain. I know its not like that but I still feel that way.
Anyway I finally downloaded the pictures from my camera so there are visuals now. YEAH!

Invisagirl, your teeth look like mine did! I really wanted Invisalign, but I have bite issues and my ortho recommended Damon 3's. The protruding canines... you're my twin!
Good luck on your braces journey... in the end fabulous teeth will be worth it!

Wow, theres change even in 12 days! I swear, when I got my braces on I noticed change later that night. My boyfriend noticed it too.
So how are they doing now? It's been a few months since your last post so I'm sure theres been lots of movement.
Keep up the good mood with the braces! It'll go by faster if you forget they're there.

Well its been awhile since I've updated my story so it seems appropriate to update it now since I'm getting my bottom braces this coming Thursday.
It's amazes me that I've had braces for three months already! Time has just seemed to fly by. At times I forget I have braces and then there are times when I wish it was just over already. Up to this point I've felt lucky since I only had my upper arch braced so I'm wondering how it will be with a whole mouth full of metal. There are some days I'm glad I did this and then there are other days that I wonder if I'd do it again if I knew how my career was going to go. It seems as soon as I got braced my job suddenly went into high speed and I'm meeting all sorts of high ups and traveling and such. I'm not embarrased or anything with the braces but sometimes (I know this sounds really weird) I'll meet someone in a high up position who has bad teeth and I'll suddenly become really conscience of my braces like them seeing me with braces accentuates their problem. It's weird I can't explain it.
Reading through my old posts I'm glad to see that it seems I'm still on track for a 18 month treatment time since the original estimate was to brace the bottom arch a few months after the top. Sometimes I want to ask the ortho if everything is on schedule but I don't cause I figure its too early to say and if I'm behind I don't want to know. In a way I wish banding the lower arch could be postponed cause two days after I get braces on the bottom I leave for a temporary duty assignment for work on the east coast. It's hard enough moving much less when you've just been braced (again). I'm allowed to make trips home every three weeks so I don't think it will cause me to get behind on treatment but the length of my assignment is growing longer by the day. First it was March, then April, and now rumor is I'll be gone till August. I'm really hoping I don't start elastics while I'm out there (somehow wearing elastics in front of all this high powered people bothers me since I already have a hard enough time getting respect since I'm young and female). Guess I just have to go with the flow and see what happens!!
Anyway here is the latest and greatest photo to show my progress (my teeth really aren't that disgusting looking although it feels to me that they become a little less white everyday!)

Hey Invisagirl,
It's been awhile since I posted too. I'm glad to see the braces are going so well for you. I know what you mean about the self-conciousness of the braces and the job. I was quite self-concious with mine for awhile, but it goes away. Once you see a few adults with braces during everyday life, you'll remember theres lots of other people going through the same thing you are.
My followup treatment is going great. The retainers were very tough to get used to at first, but they're pretty easy now. I still have trouble with certain words, but no one else notices. I should be going to night wear only after another 3-4 months. Thats 24-7 wear for about 8 months and night wear only for 2 year or more. My ortho said my teeth settled in very nicely only 2 months later and expected to reduce my retainer wear quickly. He said I don't have to be really hardcore about wearing them all the time. If I cheat a little, its OK. I make sure I wear them at least 16 hours a day, usually at least 20. And everything seems to be settling in just fine.
Let us know how the bottom braces are going!
