Re: Fear of dental extraction

I've had to have three teeth extracted because of decay, and I have an extraction appointment in a few weeks to remove a tooth as I need the space before my bottom braces to go on.

Honestly, the worst part is the injection. I have a phobia of needles, so I just close my eyes open wide and pinch my hand like mad to try take my mind off it (sounds strange, but it actually works!). Even the injection just feels like a scratch and I feel like a massive baby after worrying about it!

I won't lie, you will feel pressure as the tooth is removed but this lasts like 10 seconds max. There's no pain whatsoever and even if you feel like you're not numb enough just ask the dentist for a few more mins for the stuff to kick in.

Afterwards you'll wonder what you were worrying about! :D

I had my wisdom tooth extracted the beginning of February. I am terrified of being put under, so I visited with the surgeon/dentist and told him so. He offered to extract while I was awake, but I heard this could be traumatizing. He said I only had a soft tissue extraction since the tooth was already in, and I would be completely numb. I felt comfortable doing this. When I went in, he numbed it, then waited 10 minutes and checked my numbness. He had to give me some more numbing medicine. When I was ready to go, the tooth was out in 10 minutes, and no traumatizing effects. In fact, I wish I did it 3 years ago when the tooth came in.

Congratulations tiana! Well done! Now go to the thread "What Do You Like About Yourself" and brag a little! I hope your recovery is going smoothly.

:) Well, there is little to be proud of. It took me "15" years to overcome the fear of losing a tooth.
It is a big amount of time for such a small achievement.
And right now I am keeping asking to myself if I have well done.
That hole seems huge! which is strange since the tooth was so small...

In any case, now it's done. The ortho said that in a couple of week he will start to tighten wires seriously, since now there is a lot of place to make teeth move. Uao!
