Week 17- Noticing gap is closing where missing first molar was but its not because the second molar is moving into the gap, but rather the premolars are being dragged into the gap, meaning a gap after the canine.

Week 24 update: I had an adjustment this week. I saw one of the orthodontists who works there, I had seen him before. I told him about the archwire poking the inside of my cheek from my lower sectional brace and he got a big pair of clippers and cut the nasty little bugger! Lucky it only really started poking at the beginning of the week. He said it was good news that it was doing this and the closing of the gap was coming along nicely.

He took my upper wire off and called the boss to have a look to see if I was ready to have my bottoms on, she basically had a look and said yes. She was also advising him that as soon as further gapping happens (as in my lowers) that this was the point where the lower braces should come on. She also said a panoramic x-ray should be taken to check on the short roots.

So he then starts twisting the new archwire and doing things to it, he explains that this was to help with the different sized front teeth that I must have noticed. I said of course I had noticed. So new white wire was put on, ouch that hurt immediately, especially the front teeth. Then he put a clear powerchain across my uppers, double ouch. He left my lower powerchain and archwire alone.

I had my x-ray taken and got booked in for 13th October for my lower braces!! So itll be almost 7 months into treatment that I get the lowers braced. So excited to have it done finally.

Week 27: An update on my progress, went in yesterday for my lowers to be braced, six months into my treatment after initially being told it would happen at 3 months. Teeth were sandblasted and then glue applied, then the metal brackets were bonded on. A thin metal archwire was put on and the metal brackets on both canines have hooks on- does it mean future elastic use?

The lower sectional brace was left alone and did not join the new lower brace, so I have 1 x ceramic upper brace, 1 x metal lower brace and 1 x metal sectional brace with powerchain.

My next adjustment(s) is in December, I can't wait to see movement downstairs!!

Hi Colbrit7,

I am new to the forum and I've just read a few posts, congrats on your new teeth!

I am from northwest london, uk ( and willing to travel within london), how did you go about finding the right orthodontist? Did you get a name from the forum or personal recommendation?

I don't know where to start! lol, thanks for any advice

Hi all, I wanted to update my progress. I've continued to see my orthos every 8 weeks. I've been in the same arch wires since the beginning of the year and the appointments have been to change my powerchains. I've also had two separate instances of powerchain breakages within two months which has meant having to go for extra visits.

I had an appointment today, change of both powerchains. My gap is 2.5mm? And that still needs to be closed before surgery. I see them again in 6 weeks to get my back molars braced, ortho said I should be ready for surgery before Xmas.

Hi all

Been so long since I updated last- sorry not good at this. There hasn't been that much to say and all my visible movement was achieved at the beginning of my treatment so my photos would just be repetitive. I have continued with average 8 week appointments to see my orthos, they change my wires and my powerchain each time and we reached December 2013 and they told me it was the last wire change and to see them again in February.

So this month they contact me to tell me they would like the surgeon to see me and could I come in this month as he only comes in once a month so I had to book half a day off work to see him. I have a 13mm overjet and he plans to forward my lower jaw by 10mm and he doesn't think a genioplasty would be necessary. He's placed me on the waiting list and I should have my op in 3-4 months. He still felt I could do with some upper arch expansion so my ortho had me stay and change my wire immediately. He showed my the molds i got done recently with the expected jaw relationship, looks so cool!

I've had my braces on for 22 months now so its kind of dragging on a bit, the gap on my lower jaw has still not been completely closed. I had some new photos taken and they showed me them compared to the originals when i went for my initial consultation in Jan 2012, my upper arch is soooo different, it had an initial trapezium shape, now its a lovely arc.

My next appointment is in April so hopefully I will have a surgery date by then.

Update: I was given a surgery date in May for 3rd July which has now been moved to 2nd July. Its now becoming real. I had to arrange an appointment with my ortho to get the surgical hooks put onto my braces so that's all ready now. I went into the hospital this week to get some impressions done, measurements and biting into some hot waxy putty. I then saw my surgeon who had me posture my jaw out and he again said that I was borderline for a genioplasty and that he would wait to see when he was operating.

Next appointment this Wednesday and the following Wednesday for pre op assessment and measurement for a splint.

2nd Update: I had another hospital appointment yesterday for x-rays, signing of the consent form, explanation of the surgery and swabs to check for infection. I saw 3 doctors and finally the surgeon confirmed that there will be no genioplasty, just the BSSO. So have to be at the hospital at 11am on 2nd July for my surgery.
