It takes a great deal of courage form most adults to make the decision to get braces. Gut-wrenching, as you so rightly put it, especially the social aspect. But there's another way to look at it. When you get braces many others are looking at you and admiring you for having the intestinal fortitude to better your bite and your looks. And many others would do it if they could afford it as braces are not cheap.

Yes, exactly. I've had braces for a little over a week now and some people have mentioned how their teeth need braces but they're too afraid to go for it. A guy I work with said he respected me for doing it. Others either haven't noticed at all or will notice and then we move on with the conversation like it's no big deal.

Maybe we should start a "Braces Envy" thread!

I envy you!! Today is a week and Im still doing my best to avoid people because I feel like I need to go into a long spiel of why I got them at my age. I do know what you mean though.....

I told one friend and she told me of 2 people I know of (her friends) that got braces at my age or a little older.
I told a guy at work and he told me how his wife has to wear 2 different retainers and shes probably 10 yrs older then me.
I told another friend and she said she wishes she could get braces but cant afford it because her daughter needs them more.

I know its all me and my head making this a big deal. I was horribly self consious before too so at least now Im doing something about it.

There's no need to go into a long spiel about why you got braces or even offer any explanation at all. Age is not an issue or a factor. If asked, you could just say something like, "I had some bite issues that had to be addressed..." or "I decided I wanted to still have my own teeth when I'm ninety..." or "I just thought it was time to take care of things..." or if the age thing bothers you, "I just wanted to feel like a teenager again!" Nobody else needs to know the intimate details nor do you owe anybody an explanation. I myself envy those who can just smile widely and proudly to show off their braces. I don't try to hide them, but am not a big smiler and probably many people don't even realize I'm wearing braces. No matter, it's obvious they don't particularly care.

Be proud of yourself. Just go out as if nothing has changed. Maybe you need to take small steps. Go out and get a coffee. Go to the convenience store and buy something. Ask one of your understanding friends to go out somewhere with you, share that you're self-conscious and need some support. It won't take long to overcome the anxiety. Please trust me.

Wish you luck! :jump:

Aww thank you! I actually have made it more of a point to talk today at work. I figure people that I come in contact with everyday have already noticed and I have a year left of this so I need to embrace it.

I mentioned it to some people, but I am really excited  so i will probably be smiling a lot after they go on. I don't really care what people think about it, I am doing this for me!

Today was my first day at work after being braced. My closest friend and co-worker did not even notice!!! Guess I have good lip control over and above these things. :D I finally couldn't stand it any longer and said "well, I'm braced for whatever comes along today. See? "
One other co-worker noticed on his own but knew of my plan. As others here have said, most folks are self-absorbed with their own lives (a-hem: like we are on this topic) and care for maybe half a second!

I went shopping recently with 2 friends. One knew I got braces and the other had no idea of my plans. I feel like I cant talk right some times so I said something about it and they were both like what? braces? I didnt even notice. Then again at lunch while I was pulling my sandwich apart I commented what a chore it was and again they were 'I totally forgot because you cant tell'. Of course I think they were just trying to make me feel good.

Well I am not nervous... right now at least... I probably will be the day of- but my apt is at 7:30 AM so I wont have much time to dwell on it. I think I will even forgo the coffee (UGH gonna be VERY hard), but I don't want to have to run to the bathroom too much from nerves/coffee... :paperbag:
I have not ever asked myself if this is what I want to do as far as the actual braces go, I have questioned my decision to spend so much $$ on myself. That is actually causing me the most stress. I am not accustomed to spending that much $ on myself. My daughter- not a bit of problem spending the $ on her... I know that I am worth it, but sometimes it just seems that she has so much in front of her as far as life goes that the money is better spent on her. Anyway- I decided that it was time for me to do something for myself, and I got such an awesome payment plan set up- that I just decided to take the plunge, and not to worry. I will all work out, I have faith that it will . :)

JeniK- Did you say that you were getting metal traditional braces? I must have missed you telling me.

Kids041...I will have metal on bottom and clear on top. I am excited to get my teeth straightened...but the question of spending the money is what is on my mind now. But as you said..it will all work out!
My :-* appt is at 8:00 AM Tuesday, going to my regular dentist at 7. Thank goodness these 2 work together and their offices are close!
So with metal on the bottom...I have been trying to decide what color ligs I want! Have you thought of what color you are going to choose ?
