No feeling in chin/lip after 3 weeks

#1 Post by sharp »

Hi everyone

I've just had my lower jaw moved forward and a genioplasty.

I know the surgeons told me there would be loss of feeling for a while and possibly it may never fully come back...

I've got no feeling at all currently in the right side of my lower lip and the right side of my chin. I can't feel hot or cold, and I can't feel food running down my face. It's been 3 weeks since surgery.

Has anyone else had no feeling in parts of their face this long after surgery?

I have pulsating feelings on the parts that have no feeling.

Totally normal at this point. I'm 3 weeks post op as well and don't have light-touch or hot/cold sensation on my bottom lip or chin. I do have some pressure sensation, and like you, have noticed some "pulsating" and tingling/burning paresthesias. These sensations are usually a sign that the nerves are healing. I've heard tight touch sensation may not return for 2-6 months. Makes it difficult to eat and drink.

Well that's comforting to hear.

I've had to rely on my family pointing out that I have food/drink (in one case blood) running down my chin.

When alone, I've been eating in front of a mirror - otherwise my shirt gets covered in food.

If I suffered permanent feeling loss, that would be the nail in the coffin for me. I've had braces for 7 years and I've had just about enough! :)

Totally normal! In fact, it's totally normal to feel that way for months or even up to a year. Past a year or so they say that whatever numbness you still have you're probably stuck with, but some people report getting more feeling back 1.5-2 years post op.
