Hi! Newbie here
Hi! I am a 20 year old female and about to get braces for the first time. I am a veterinary technician, and also studying pre-nursing (human medicine ). I am a little nervous about how the braces will affect my appearance. Clients already view me as a young'n and I don't want my braces to de-age(?) me further
It's T-minus 1 1/2 days until the braces go on (Friday the 13th of all days!). Have had 8 rubber spacers in between my molars for the last 7 days. My teeth were so tight, the spacers were horrible the first 5-6 days. Or maybe I am just a big baby when it comes to mouth pain, I'm not sure. Now its just a dull ache that I only notice when I close my mouth tight.
I opted for ceramic brackets on my top front teeth (thought it might look more professional?), and traditional metal everywhere else since it really doesn't show. I know ceramics are harder to take care of but I typically practice really good oral hygiene so I don't anticipate it being a problem.
As far as a treatment plan, my ortho hasn't told me much. I know a lot of it is determined along the course of treatment, but the day of braces do they typically lay out the plan as far as what is moving where and what appliances they want to use? I know my Dr's overall goal for my mouth but that's about it.
Overall, I have been happy with my experience so far. Definitely excited to fix my mouth, and I will use all the tips on this site to make the treatment time as bearable as possible! Thanks guys

Oops I meant to say 2 1/2 days... yep it's late and I''m tired
Re: Hi! Newbie here
Welcome to the forums and congrats on scheduling a brace date!
Don't worry about looking younger... I never understood why people saw that as a problem. When I was 18 and had just started college, I was at work and a customer came in and asked me how a 13-year-old would be allowed to have a job during the school day, so I understand how it feels. Now I'm closer to 30 than to 25 and I was thrilled last week when an older couple asked me what college I'm attending and if I had started classes yet (I graduated 5 years ago... eeek ).
Embrace your youthful looks... one day you'll wish you looked younger

Re: Hi! Newbie here
Hi. I just got my braces on yesterday but just the top set so far. Mine are ceramic and I'm a primary school teacher so was terrified about what my class of 6 year olds would say today. No one said a word. I don't know whether they just didn't notice or were too freaked out to ask!! My colleagues were really sweet though and said they are pretty discreet. Problem is, whenever I smile I feel that me lip gets a bit stuck on them and it feels awkward to put my face straight again. Guess ill just have to be a misery guts for a few years.
Good luck with getting yours on! We will be so glad we've taken the plunge in the end!!

I went with metal braces on top and bottom and I feel like it's the first thing people notice about me now. I would not worry so much about it making you appear younger, youth is a great thing!

Re: Hi! Newbie here
Thanks for the support and advice everyone!
It's been 8 hours since the braces went on. My teeth are just starting to feel sore, and the inside of my cheeks are beginning to be irritated. It feels weird having something so foreign in my mouth, and makes eating uncomfortable because food sticks to the brackets so easily. I have brushed my teeth 3 times since my appointment this morning, and rinsed with mouth wash about twice that much!
I do love the look of my top braces, they blend in with the teeth well. I was surprised when my orthodontist told me that my ceramics were a self ligating type, therefore they would not be prone to staining due to the absence of the little rubber ligatures. I can still have my coffee!!
I went to work immediately after my ortho appointment was over. Clients didn't seen to notice or care that I had braces which was a relief. Although I am having to learn to talk a little slower and more clear or else my lips get stuck up on the brackets and it garbles my words.

Congrats on the new braces. I'm on day 5 and my ulcers are definitely inproving. I also managed garlic bread tonight which makes a change from soup and milkshake. Things are looking up. Ceramics really are fab. So many people haven't even noticed and you will get used to them in no time. I still feel like my mouth catches when I smile but I'm sure that will improve.
