OUCH!!!!! first adjustment

#1 Post by hairhead22 »

OK i went to the ortho today for my first adjustment and he had to replace one of my bracets because it fell off. Well I'm new to this whole braces thing but all i know is this wire he put on is one thick MFER *pardon my french* I asked him WHY so thick he said , i think it is what he said, and archwire 22?? he had to crisscross the bands just to keep from having the bands snap... looks cool though i have to add. But he did say YOU WILL HURT and more than a normal adjustment because he is trying to open up my bite before he can put the bottom on. He said this wire will do it faster than any other wire. I was happy though because i noticed usually the assistants do the majority of the adjustment and my DR did the entire thing only because of how he was putting the bands on....

Yikes! That sounds so horribly painful! I had a large wire put on 2 adjustments ago.My ortho had to do it (like yours) and he actually put both his hands in my mouth trying to get it into my back brackets. I could feel my head being smashed into the chair. The good thing is, he is right. You will see lots of movement right away. At least there's something good out of it. Now you have made me dread the removal of my lower archwire (it's still a thick one). :soremouth:

I feel your pain, literally. I don't think my last wire was that thick, but I knew I was in for some hurt when my head started being wrenched around because of him trying to get the wire in my back brackets. Oh how right I was. That night I actually cried, they hurt so bad.

It was far worse than when I got the braces put on. I went for the 3rd adjustment yesterday and when the asst. asked how I was, I said, "Fine as long as you don't do anything like you did to me last time."

She said I have one more wire change coming next month.... a bigger one!! Then powerchains after that. I'll be a regular Sally Sunshine by that point.

PS. It took almost 2 weeks for the intense pain of that wire to go away. Best of luck to you!
Full upper and lower metal braces put on May 12, 2005.

I got a new wire..not as thick, just from 14 to 18...and it really hurt...to be honest for the first time since being braced. The first night I took two painkillers...nothing....soo  I had 3 beers...and went to bed without a problem 8) Thank God we are ADULTS..... I guess I might use 'this' painkiller when needed

I had my first adjustment yesterday, and boy, my bottom teeth hurt!

It's interesting how your expectation affects how you feel the pain. Before braced, I prepared myself for the worst since I read so many pain stories here. It turned out to be better than I expected, so I took the pain really well. So this time around, I thought it would be no big deal and didn't expect much pain, but it turned out worse than I expected, and thus seems more painful.

In a word, I don't think it hurts as much as when I first got braced, but it's my expectation that tricks me to feel differently about the pain.
