Just had my lingual braces put on

#1 Post by tchahine1 »

Last week on Friday i had both top and bottom lingual braces put on. Let me tell you the first 4 days i had them were probably one of the worst 4 days of my life. As soon as the orthodontist finish putting the braces in, i quickly realized that i talked with a lisp. I was freaking out!!! i asked the orthodontist what happened to my voice and she told me that i will eventually get it back and that i just need to talk a lot and sing when i'm at home. My tongue was getting destroyed throughout those 4 days!!!! i mean even if i wasn't eating, just by talking your tongue is rubbing on the braces and let me tell you it's not a good feeling. All i could eat my first few days was soup and it wasn't very easy to do because you have to get your tongue used to swalling a different way. after that you'll eventually be able to eat mash potatoes lol. it's been a week now and the pain has gone down a lot and using wax on the braces has helped me a ton. My voice is getting back to normal but it still not a 100%. I just hope soon enough i'll be able to start eating again! i've lost 5 lbs this past week!

I thought about lingual braces but I think my mouth is just too small for them. I hope everything goes back to normal for you. :)

Best of luck! I promise the first week is the worst. It gets much better and you'll be back to talking normally before you know it!

It's horrible to start with and it will be for quite some time. However you will need to watch what you eat over most of your treatment. I'm close to done and trust me it'll be worth it.

so here is my update on how my braces feel as of now. I eventually got used to my braces overtime and i don't need to use wax anymore. My lisp is still there but no one can ever tell unless i speak really fast. The pain in my mouth is minimal now and my tongue got used to it (thank god). Having the braces is still annoying sometimes because it is such a hassle with only being able to eat certain foods and then have to brush every time you eat. On the bright side i can see changes (in a good way) and my orthodontist told me that i'll have my braces taken out in the end of January. So i'm looking forward to it and i'll keep you guys updated on how things work out

Hello. I am new to this forum. I am in my 3rd day with stb braces on my upper teeth. No pain so far, just some pressure...

I'm new too. 3rd day with eBraces - top and bottom.
My teeth don't really hurt as I only have a really thin wire on at the moment so they haven't started moving, but the bottom brackets feel like they're ripping up my tongue so it hurts to eat and speak.
Lots of wax for me...

My speech is better with the wax on, and is getting better the more I talk anyway.

I have no doubt I will have forgotten all about them in a week or so, apart from the hours and hours I seem to spend flossing and poking about with interdental brushes. But for now, ouch.

Now where did I put the anasethetic throat spray to squirt under my tongue...

I've had my lingual braces for the last 18 days.

Ditto on the first 4 days. Really terrible. My tongue was cut to ribbons. It was like wearing a cheese grater in my mouth. Eating was hard and I talked with a lisp.

After a week everything started to settle. If I speak slowly now I can just about hide the lisp. My tongue only hurts now at the end of the day if I've been talking a lot.

Oh, and my German pronunciation improved because my tongue was forced into a different position due to the braces, amazingly enough.

Oh, wow. My ortho only did the lowers to start with. It has been only a week and today is probably the first day that I feel no cuts or sores on my tongue. The first four were brutal...and that's with just with lowers! I can't imagine having had both in at the same time.
I am hoping that the uppers won't have the same effect; at least not to that magnitude. I mean, the top of your tongue is already used to friction and whatnot. Right?
I should be getting those in January.

I'm about a month in now and the pain on my tongue is pretty much gone. No need for wax at all. My speech is almost there too. I have a slight lisp but it's hardly noticeable.

Looking back I think I should have gone with lower first, then the upper. I elected to go with both together.

If you do have more pain when the upper are fitted, just keep in mind that it wont last too long and you'll adapt relatively quickly.

Best of luck!

I had both together but the uppers really caused me NO trouble at all. Well, an occasional wire catch with my tongue when I'm poking around, but that's my own fault.

It's a piece of cake compared to the bottom!

I had both put on at the same time, and it was my uppers that gave (give) me the most grief. I'm a wimp, and still use half a stick of silicone wax on my upper and lower front teeth each day. I have a really small/narrow mouth, and even at rest, my tongue feels cramped up against the brackets.

My lisp is mostly improved unless I have a day where I've talked a lot. Then my tongue feels sore, and I definitely lisp more.
