Post surgery cold sores

#1 Post by Sheffy »

Hello

I'm a week post op for upper and lower jaw surgery. The day I came out of hospital I was attacked by a couple of monstrous cold sores which aren't doing anything to help my swollen lips go down! Has anyone else had similar problems? I'm worried they're going to spread even further and somehow affect the incision sites.

thanks

Hmmm... they could be localized swelling as a result of the extreme stretching that takes place during surgery. When's your next followup with your surgeon? He could take a look; if it is an actual cold sore, the best treatment is Abreva. Abreva is an OTC drug that should be sold at any pharmacy; it's not cheap but it actually works (as opposed to the Camphor/Eucalyptus and other "natrual" remedies that merely make it feel better.)

If it's not an actual cold sore, I'd just use Carmex, Orajel, or one of those "natural" cold sore remedies I just said not to use on actual cold sores.

Thanks for the reply. I saw the surgeon again and he just chuckled and said these things happen after surgery! Anyway, they seem to have cleared up now (touch wood) with no ill effect so I'm hoping they'll stay away.

i had double jaw surgery 8 days ago and on about day 4, the soreness around the corners of my mouth started peeling. i was warned about my mouth being split and sore because of being pulled around, so it didnt worry me too much then on day 6 the rednes was spreading and getting yellow bumps in, so i went to the pharmacist and as recomended blistex relief cream, a cream for occasional cold sores and very chapped lips. within 2 days the sores are just small pink patches and my lips are beautifully soft, although still completly numb. i will be telling my sugeon about this cream on monday so that he can recomend it to others as its done an incredible job at clearing my lips up
hope your soreness stays away
