6 month smiles - ouch!

#1 Post by shiningnebula »

I've had my 6 month smile in for just over 5 weeks and had my first follow up appointment a couple of days ago. He removed the wires which was fine but then he started filing in between my teeth and this was so painful that I actually broke out in a cold sweat. The amount of blood was horrific and I swear I could see bits of my actual gum in the basin. I am dreading my next appointment. Do they always change the wire and file between teeth during these appointments? I was hoping they just somehow tightened the existing wire. I do have crowding so I guess I can't get away from the filing. Stuff of nightmares!

On a more positive note, I'm definitely seeing some good movement after just 5 weeks... still a bit taken aback by the how painful the dentist visit was though.

I have never heard of 6 month braces...Are they only for minor cases? I can't imagine how painful a full treatment would be if it were squeezed into 6 months. Ouch!

I'm doing 6 month smiles too, I'm on day 5. My teeth were also filed beforehand. Yikes it's awful! Dentist dinged my gum and I just about hit the roof  Don't tell me do it at every wire change!

Glad you're seeing progress at 5 weeks. Right now I am relying on dental wax and Iglu ulcer treatment to make it bearable. I'm sure once I can see progress it will be easier.

That sounds really painful. How often do you get adjusted?

I am just about to start with cfast braces (similar to 6 month) and the dentist explained that he would make a bit of room by filing between some teeth - it sounds awful - not looking forward to it at all - although I'd prefer that than having one removed! He did say he will put some anesthetic on my gums before he did it - did yours do that??

just had my first adjustment appointment 4 weeks after having cfast braces fitted.
i had some teeth filed after she removed the wire, but she was very careful and it didn't hurt a bit.
she used 3 different grades from fine to one that felt quite coarse.

Hi Daveyw - brilliant to hear from someone else having cfast braces!! And also that the filing wasn't so bad! How is it going? Im getting mine on Thursday and getting nervous now. Im constantly thinking about what I will and will not be able to eat! How have you found staining?? Are things moving as quickly as you hoped?? How long do you think you'll be wearing them for? Sorry - so many questions!!lol

Youch! Despite the agony you must have been in seeing such good progress at 5 weeks must be amazing Shiningnebula! Did they say whether any more filing would be needed?

Really looking forward to getting fastbraces now just to see any progress - am due to be braced in two weeks
Being quite a nervous patient this post almost had me in tears - but better to be informed eh?!

I'm hoping for a pain free experience like Daveyw!
And nice to hear from others having fastbraces too, I already panicking and my appointment is not until 22nd, please let us know how you get on Belle37 and very best of luck too

Hi shiningnebula
How are you getting on with your 6 month smiles now? I'm thinking of either getting these or Fastbraces.

seems i'm doing a lot of late posting here

been a few months now, did you get your braces fitted?
i'm near the end of my treatment now, just a few last small movements to do mainly rotations.
it's frustrating to be so close, but movements so slow.
staining didn't bother me much as my lip covers most of the brace,
i would have been prepared to wear luminous purple braces to get my teeth straight after all these years

movement was quick the first few months but has now slowed as there isn't far to go....
i did have a few weeks where my teeth got really loose on the second month with a thick wire, that was quite sore.
but otherwise there has been little or no discomfort.
and only usually for a few days after an adjustment.
