Help! Question on speech problem
I am 42 and I have had my braces on for 2 weeks. I have developed a problem with saying my "f's" and "s's". Will this go away or am I stuck with this until these things come off?!! I sound like a kindergardner!
It's all about ME!
Braces went on 8/25/05. Div II whatever that means!!

I've had mine for almost 4 months and the "F" problem won't go away. I whistle when I make the "F" sound. Not a normal whistle- an airy, squeaky, annoying whistle. I've tried all sorts of ways to get rid of it (speaking slower, moving my mouth in a different way when saying F's) but to no avail.

LOL I too, was horrified at my "speech impedient" for the first couple weeks of braces.
In short, yep it goes away. No worries. Really shouldn't be too much longer, but those "s" sounds still get me every once in awhile I've found.

My speech problem lasted for about two weeks and then went away.
To speed up the process, perhaps you should try reading outloud to yourself in private....the more speech practice you get, the quicker the impediment is going to leave you.

I'm certainly glad I'm not alone in this. My dad's been mocking me for a week about my new speech impediment. And my co-workers, though kind, have to keep asking me to repeat myself.
I feel like Cindy Brady. Shelly sells seashells at the seashore.
Oh...I've been reading my homework aloud and singing a lot, hoping that it would go away. It hasn't helped.

LOL I still drool a lot, and at random too.KK wrote:Hi, I've had my uppers on for six weeks and had no speech problems. Yesterday my lowers were put on and now my when I say words with s and f ... there's a noticeable lisp. My hubby said it's cute ... but it doesn't feel cute! Hopefully it will pass quickly, as I have to answer the phone quite a lot at work. I'm grateful I'm not doing any counselling work at the moment ... as I also seem to be spitting and dribbling! Oh the joy of being an adult with braces!
Just 2 days ago I was standing there at my bathroom mirror plucking my eyebrows and apparently I had my mouth open a bit ( kinda like the mascara thing ). I felt something cold on my shirt sleeve and looked down and there was a huge river of drool that had cascaded out of my mouth right down my arm!
I felt a tad bit goofy.

Brace whistle
HA! I thought I might have been the only person with that problem. I call it the "brace whistle." My students used to snicker at me when that would happen. I told them that they should remember when they were in high school and how they sounded. Sometimes I do it to annoy my cat when she's meowing to get me to give her some cat treats. HAHAHA!

Ah I thought I was the only one! I sound like I have a lisp, and I hate reading aloud (which is something I used to enjoy doing) now. I've had my braces for 11 months and it hasnt gone away in the slightest, and i talk a lot so it isnt like im not trying to get rid of it. Grrr!!

daffyduck ....
I've had a lisp since being braced that is sometimes not too bad - and then gets worse after an adjustment/wire change and I'm back to square one. It comes and goes but like the whole ortho journey, it is something that will be experienced differently by each individual.
I can't say sixty-six without sounding like daffy duck.

Is kinda scary at times though ... at work today I've tried to keep a more distance from clients as I don't think they need a soaking ... at least it's raining outside so they mightn't realise it was me!
I use it to my advantage. When I'm not in the mood for kisses from my hubby, I just start foaming at the mouth on demand.
