Schwartz appliance

#1 Post by Printemps »

Hi all
has anyone had experience with a schwartz for palatal expansion as an adult? Ive heard it is effective, not only in tipping the teeth but a degree of skeletal expansion too. Does anyone have any info, as its haard to find!
I've been proposed a 3 way schwartz with occlsual coverage, a removable retainer type appliance. Has anyone had the same appliance?? Did you find it effective?

A quick Googling seemed to indicate it was only for use in growing patients, not adults.

I had a Schwartz appliance (49 years old) for 9 months and it did FANTASTIC in lining up and pulling back my front teeth. I almost didn't want to go ahead with the braces (have had 1 month today) as my teeth looked so great. I agreed to finish up with 12 months in metal braces so I would have the perfect smile. My bite was also off from the schwartz so the braces will fix that. A lot I read online said that it would not work for adults but it worked great for me and I am THRILLED that I went ahead and did this.

I know this post is old, but I currently have a Schwartz appliance (I'm 29 years old) and it's working quite well! Yes, it's a huge pain to wear.. it hurts, it makes you talk funny, and it is uncomfortable for the first couple of weeks, especially when you take it in/out to eat.

BUT... it has successfully expanded my upper palate, and a space developed between my two front teeth. My ortho is pleased with the results. As long as you wear it faithfully, it should do its job.
