I'm curious to see if anyone who is well past their surgery is still checking out this forum and can chime in on this subject. I've searched quite a bit and have read past discussions about this but it's hard to get news from patients who have understandably moved on to other things in their lives.
I am 49, sporting a Class III with a crossbite, and have decided to get it taken care of. I'm not exactly ancient but have read that the older you get, the higher the odds of permanent numbness for lower jaw surgeries.
What has been your experience, long-time jaw surgery survivors?
Thank you in advance
Older patients and numbness: what has been your experience?

Re: Older patients and numbness: what has been your experien
I was about 30 when I had BSSO advancement and my nerve recovered with painful neuropathy. The pain is quite bad and sometimes I would exchange it happily for a numb chin.
Did you know that pain is more likely to occur than numbness after this surgery and 70% of patients feel all three possible feelings together (pain, numbness and altered sensation)!?
Some patients may recover with total loss of sensation but feel neuropathic pain in the chin. It feels like the chin lives it's own life and there is nothing you can do if your orthodontist or surgeon did not sent you for a consultation. In UK the best specialist on trigeminal nerve injuries in Tara Renton in KCH in London.
