Getting braces in three weeks - any advice for a newbie?

#1 Post by nuna »

Hello everyone:)
This is my first post on this forum and I just would like to introduce myself as for next year or more a will be on here very often:)

I am 30 to female living in the UK. I have just had appointment few days ago and getting braces on the 24th July! I have been toying with the idea of getting braces for many years but only two weeks ago I have decided to get an appointment with a dentist and investigate my options. I have decided to go for ceramic braces on top and bottom teeth. I am very excited and spending ages reading the forum and peoples stories.

Is it normal go get so excited about getting braces? I know that probably within a day i am going to hate them but now I just cannot wait:)

I;m off to ready more diaries and stories:)bye

Hello and welcome to the forum! :) I was one of those people excited to get braces on because I had wanted them for so long. With braces, it's all about your attitude about them and you sound like you have a great one. :) They're really not bad and once you see changes you'll be even more happy you did this! :)
Good luck with your brace day and your treatment!

Welcome! I also was excited to get braces because ive wanted them since I was a teenager and was finally able to get them last month at age 28. Ive already seen great progress and that makes it even more exciting. Ive been one of the lucky ones in that I havent experienced any pain or any real discomfort with my braces (at least not yet, I still have 11-17 months to go lol) so the whole experience has been a positive one for me so far. I hope its easy sailing for you too and look forward to hearing more about your story

Hi Featheryy1221 and nicolie825. Thanks for your advice. I have spend ages reading peoples stories online and to be honest got a bit worried. I havent relised that cleaning/flossing routine is so demanding. Also reading about tooth discoloration got me very worried! Started to write a list of questions for my dentist. I bet he will think I am mad showing up for my appointment with a A4 paper full of questions

Flossing isn't as bad as some people on this site may say. I thought it was going to be terrible when I read about it on here, but honestly it's a piece of cake. The first week you do it, you'll probably be slow at it and get frustrated but its important that you do it. It took me about an hour to do the first week, but after that it only takes me about 5 minutes give or take. Just do it at night when you have the most time. Waterflossers don't replace flossing, but they're a nice tool to have if you feel like you're going to get a lot of food stuck.
As for the white spots, as long as you brush properly they won't be a problem. :) They'll teach you how to brush them after you get them on. If you can, you could buy a fluoride rinse, that can help prevent cavities and strenghthen enamel. I use one myself and its helped me have less stress about spots. :)

It will be me... flossing for an hour! I m so useless at it. Shame to admit but I ve only started to floss few weeks ago after a hygienist showed me how too. I am useless at it! I hope I get better at it as you did.

I got the fluoride mouth wash on my shopping list. I hope that the hygienist or orthodontist will spend some time with me to show me how to clean things properly.

Right, I think I should stop worrying now and just wait to get the 'bad boys' installed on my teeth and see how it goes;)

Hi pjade1:) oh, it is so cool we getting braces at similar time! Are you excited or worries about getting your braces? Do you know what braces you getting?

I was ok few days ago but after doing some research I am getting a bit worried. I think now excitement passed a little and I ve started to think about boring stuff like cleaning routine or scary stuff like eating in public! But hey ho it will be worth it for that 'Hollywood star' smile:)

I am getting Innovation Cs on top (ceramic) and Innovation Rs on bottom (metal) They are similar to Damons just a different brand. I just got spacers put in today. So far, I am feeling fine but we'll see how I feel in the morning. I think I am finally mentally prepared.

I got my braces back in August last year and the excitement still hasn't worn off :) I think that's one of the few bonuses of being an adult in braces. You really appreciate the work that is being done since you've waited so long and (most likely) paid for it yourself. Good luck! You will be so happy!

The spacers are annoying but I they are not painful. I can feel the pressure, especially when I eat hard foods but it's not bad at all. Today I ate corn on the cob because I know I will not have that for a couple of years or so. I have been eating chips, nuts and other hard foods. I am not sure what I will have for that last meal. I plan to eat a good breakfast before I go to my appt in the morning and something good for dinner the night before. Ice cream sounds good but I can still have that with braces! Hmm, I might have to buy some bagels too. That sounds good.

Thanks pjade1. The installation was a bit uncomfortable but not painful. I think the excitement is passing now and annoyance is kicking in :-?

Ha, I am sure I will be dealing with that tomorrow too. I think I will start a journal in the braces story section tomorrow. Sorry to hear about the annoyance. I am sure you will get used to it all in time.
