So I just left my orthodontics office a couple hours ago after getting my braces on..I must admit these things take a little getting used to!
The visit went fairly well, I've always been petrified of the dentist (hence my braces at the ripe old age of 32 years) but believe it or not I nearly fell asleep during the process.
I have a million thoughts going through my head right now. When will the soreness hit? Anything in my teeth? Do I look like a complete goon??? In all honesty I'm slowly coming to grasp with it and I really can't wait to see some results!

I'm also 32 and got braced not long ago myself. I'm still having trouble getting used to mine (the bottoms are harder to get used to for some reason). No matter what, the dentist still scares me and that's why I didn't get braces until now. When I got the top done, the pain didn't start until the next day. It wasn't too bad and it only hurt more if I tried to chew. It took about 8 days or so for me to start chewing. I can't say much about the bottoms since I got my wisdom teeth removed a week after getting the bottoms so I had to go longer to eat solid food. Pain-wise, the bottom hurt more but it wasn't excruciating.

Ugghh you said the E word, extracted. I'm hoping I can go through this whole process without having my wisdom teeth pulled. I was told I should be ok but there's always that nagging thought In the back of my mind that it will come up at some point.
It's nice to know that I'm not the only 32 year old doing this. From the looks of the forum there's quite a few adults going for the ride it just doesn't seem you find them in your everyday real life.
I'm starving and am about to take that next big step...my first meal!

I felt like the only one until I found this forum myself. The ortho told me to get them all 4 extracted ASAP due to me having insufficient room in my mouth. If you don't have much room in the mouth, it's better to take them out, but just do what the ortho says as the ortho may have another opinion. Stick to a semi-liquid diet for a few days. I went as long as I did because I was too scared to hurt myself.

I got my braces at 33. They will take a lot of getting used to, I was a little scared when I went in to get mine done. But I have a great dentist, and I felt more at ease when they went on

Thanks for the replies everyone..
I'm getting the hang of it. I guess the eating is the toughest part. Last night for dinner I made a couple bean burritos with some diced onion in it and what an eye opener!! Yes it was soft but that damn mushy tortilla really gave me a run for my money. I couldn't believe the amount of mush stuck in my metal 8^]
Lesson learned!

Hi, good luck with your treatment. I'm just over 18 months into mine and it has been absolutely fine. It does take some getting used to at first but within a short time you will forget you have them (I'm sure you don't believe me just yet). Most of us experience some soreness after an adjustment but this passes fast and you start to wonder if they are doing anything. Take plenty of photo's as you will be surprised just how much happens so quickly during the early stages. It's only later on when they are using stiffer wires that everything seems to take so much longer. I look forward to hearing how you are getting on.nickd503 wrote:So I just left my orthodontics office a couple hours ago after getting my braces on..I must admit these things take a little getting used to!
