So I had my pre-op earlier this afternoon, and it all went pretty well! I was there for a couple of hours but a lot of that time was waiting around. When I first got there I went in to see a nurse who checked my blood pressure, temperature, height and weight, then stuck a cotton swab up my nose to test for MRSA. Had to do a swab from the top of my leg as well but she let me do that one haha. Then it was back out to the waiting area for a while until the doctor called me through - she took my medical history, then went over the procedure with me to make sure I knew what was being done, got me to sign a consent form and then sent me away for some blood tests. I had two blood tests and have to go back at some point during the week running up to the surgery for another one. She said this last blood test will be to find out my blood type in case I need a transfusion.

And that was that! I see my surgeon again on Friday to go over the final plan for the op and to check that my wafers fit.

Thanks oimysizex! Fingers crossed they send your appointment through soon!

I'm pretty sure a wafer is what other people call a splint? It's the thing that the surgeon will use during the surgery to guide the bite into place. I'll report back on Friday when I've seen it lol!

I am really not looking forward to being able to brush properly. I'm worried that I'll end up with a load of cavities :( But I guess after going through all this, having a few fillings done will be a breeze in comparison! I have bought my baby toothbrush in preparation though... it has mermaids on it, much cooler than my normal toothbrush!! Are you very worried about brushing?

That's cool that your boss has experience of it, having an understanding boss makes things a lot easier. Although you could probably do without the horror stories!! Did his go badly?

Oh no mouth ulcers are so miserable :( Are they from your braces rubbing? I used to get some terrible ones but touch wood haven't had one for a while. You need to crack out the bonjella! Hope you feel better soon!

I'm scheduled for a BSSO, Dec. 18th, and my insurance approved it!!

I have a jaw bra. I used and LOVED it for my SARPE last year. I might get some extra ice packs for it b/c they take a long time to freeze. I got two sets of ice packs with the jaw bra, but I remember wishing I had a third set for my SARPE b/c they were taking so long to freeze.

I've got a Vitamix blender. It can literally blend a cellphone, so I'm set in that department.

Just bought a wedge pillow for sleeping upright, a bed tray with folding legs for eating etc. in bed, and a juicer. I bought them online so haven't received them yet. I did not have any of these for my SARPE, and I kind of wished I did, so I'm getting them now. I was eating soft foods a couple of days after my SARPE so I was OK on nutrition, but this time I'll be banded shut. I thought the juicer could be good for getting more nutrients from veggies and such.

I'm starting to make a bunch of chicken stock and bone broth to freeze. I'll have some to drink, and also to make soup and stuff.

I'm trying out some organic baby food packets that squeeze right out of their pouch. Hopefully I can use those for quick meals. (here: http://www.ellaskitchen.com/ )

I've also started "pinning" smoothie and blended soup recipes so I have ideas on hand. I'm going to try to make and freeze some soup ahead, too.

My husband is going to visit his family after Christmas, and either my mom or my sister is going to be here to help me when he's out of town. That's why I'm trying to get this much food figured out ahead of time. I don't want to leave it to them to figure out what/how to feed me :) Plus, I know for the first week at least I probably won't be cooking anything (at least not from scratch) and I want to have plenty on-hand that my husband, myself, and my family can heat up without thinking about it.

I'm not going to even be in the hospital overnight (it's more affordable that way and insurance might not have approved a longer stay) so I don't need all of the eye masks or ear plugs. They might be a good idea if you're in the hospital a long time -- honestly I was so doped up on morphine after my SARPE that I could have slept through anything. Your mileage may vary :)

Oh a splint, im not having one of them!
Have you got a baby brush? I just know im gonna feel disgusting not being able to brush properly and having minging morning breath day and night :(
His surgery went very wrong, the screws and plates came out so his bottom jaw was literally detached and the only way he could move it was to pick it up himself, this was when surgery first came out though ha ha!!

I have gotten a random appointment with my orthodontist on the 2nd, im not meant to have one till jan 28 now but it was sent out yesterday as first class post, im thinkin this might be surgical hooks.

How you feeloing today/tonight??

I do. My family lives far away and one of my sisters is in chemo right now so she needs a lot of assistance too. I'm super lucky they offered to come take care of me!

Dear golly yes I'm nervous. I'm trying not to think about it. My husband got a card for me before my first surgery last year and I didn't really feel scared or nervous until I read it in the waiting room before I went in for my surgery prep. I just got overwhelmed. I'm sure that will happen again, but I also know that everything was fine after my SARPE with no major complications or stress (except my expander getting stuck and the key breaking a week after... but that wasn't the surgeons fault).

I'm pretty sure I'm only having the wafer in for the surgery, he said he'll take it out when he's done so I won't need to keep it in after. Fingers crossed - from what I've read on people's blogs, they don't seem very pleasant to have in!

Yes I have got one, have you? Lol I'm sooo not looking forward to not being able to brush properly... as well as the bad breath I imagine the backs of my teeth will feel all fuzzy too, eww :(

Oh jeez that's awful!! Guessing he had to have revision surgery afterwards? Is it ok now?

Yeah that sounds like it's probably for the hooks :) Good luck! Get some brace wax ready haha!!

I'm doing ok at the moment... I have random nervous wibbly moments but right now it's still too far away hehe. How are you feeling?

Oh no! :( If your orthodontist hasn't asked to see you until Tuesday, then I would think they're not too concerned about movement - it's only a few days, so there shouldn't be enough time for anything to move too drastically I wouldn't have thought. I know it's much easier said than done but I'd try not to stress yourself out about it too much - I'm absolutely certain your orthodontist and surgeon won't want your surgery delayed any more than you do!

I saw my surgeon yesterday for the last time until the morning of my surgery. He checked my wafers/splints fit - so they look a bit like the clear plastic (Essix?) retainers, except they're much more solid hard plastic. And they're flat, so rather than covering all of your teeth like the retainers, they just sit on top with the imprint of your teeth as a groove for your teeth to fit into, if that makes sense. There were two, a pinky-coloured one and a clear one, but I'm not sure what the difference was.

We talked as well about waking up after surgery and what to expect during the hospital stay - he said one to two nights so with any luck I could be home the day after. I think it's the hospital stay I'm most scared about to be honest, I've never done it before. It's all starting to feel very real now. Only a week left at work. Getting pretty scary!

Oohh yeah oimysizex, another thing I forgot - when I had my hooks put on, the force of clipping them onto the wire popped one of my brackets off. I don't know how common that is... But that might be why your orthodontist wants to wait 'til you get your hooks on to fix it!

Mmm sounds good haha! I'm not sure what my last meal will be yet, although I have a few meals out planned over the next week!

Lol I came to terms with the fact I won't be able to eat Christmas dinner a long time ago, as I got my date back in August. Hoping to have graduated to soft food by that point so I can at least have mash and gravy!! And yes I do indeed celebrate Christmas, I just now put my tree up  (my excuse is surgery... dunno how that works but it does)

Is it really only 9 days?! Omg!
