1st adjustment in 4 days! What to expect!

#1 Post by BraceFace2115 »

I've got my first adjustment in 4 days! Wow 6 weeks has flown by!
Can any tell me what to expect? Also is the pain/discomfort similar to when I had them first put on?
I'm hoping the Ortho is pleased with progress I can't wait to get them off!
Thanks :-)

Oh, I'm anxious to hear what everyone will say! My 8 weeks checkup will be 1 week late because it falls over spring break. Apparently my ortho schedules adjustments in 8 week cycles (boo!) and therefore it will be 9 weeks for my first adjustment.

Who can shed light on adjustments - what happens at first appointment?
Looking forward to the new smile,
KayKay

My first adjustment was a little painful afterwards but nothing like the initial bonding!

In my case, I got a stronger wire on the top, kept the same wire on the bottom. New elastics (that's always a given). That's it. I was on my merry way after that.

Adjustments are generally quick and easy.

Thank you! Aslong as it's not as bad at the initial brace fitting, I can't go through that pain again!
On the plus side I'm looking forward to getting a new wire because they are really poking out at the back and cutting up my gums. Also hoping I can quickly brush my teeth too ;-)

Will I start seeing movement again with the new wire? Movement seems to have stopped and that's what is keeping me motivated to continue with treatment and the monthly repayments that hit my bank account hard!

Probably! I see movement even with the same wire. I've had the same wires since maybe November and things still move a bit. My advice is to you is just relax and trust the process.

My adjustments are normally every 8 weeks and it is no where as bad as the first time brace go on and everything is sore and cut up.

So far for me for 2 adjustments I have had bottom wire changed to thicker one, the top one remained the same this time as I Am getting an expander next Thursday. But first adjustment got a thicker wire

Good luck and enjoy the ride and remember everyone's progress is individual

I just had my first adjustment...It went by great they changed both wires and gave me thicker ones..and I was able to get a white wires this time. I also had a power chain put on in the top teeth which I thought was fast, but I was glad to get. I saw more changes in the 1st month of having them on than I have since after my 1st adjustment overall..except that my spaces are closing a bit more. I was hoping they would close completely, but maybe its too soon

Good luck to you!!

For me the pain wasn't too bad, but everyone's pain tolerance is different! I also had my wires changed to a stronger one and the pain for me lasted for about 3 days and then I was able to eat whatever I wanted after that. I suggest taking pictures just because it's easier to compare and look for movement that you might not notice just by looking in the mirror all the time! Good Luck, the braces will be off before you know it!

They might make your teeth a little (or a lot) extra tender, depending how much work they need to do. They are to close gaps. I only had one little gap when I got a power chain so I didn't find it painful.

More gunk can get stuck behind the chains as well so make sure you are rinsing and brushing well! Did you get a fun colour for your power chains?

I'm using Acceledent so my adjustments are once a month and they always bump the wires up each appt. None of my wire changes have been a problem EXCEPT when they bumped my top teeth up to a rectangular wire. That was SO painful, it felt like my front teeth were being slooowwwwwly ripped out-- because, well, they were! They were so crooked it took a rectangular wire to really get them to move. Worth the pain, although it sucked at the time. The other wire changes (and even getting elastics and tiebacks) were nothing. Getting the rectangular wire on the bottom wasn't a big deal, either, but those teeth were pretty straight already.
•Braces placed August 14, 2014
•Deband November 11, 2015
•Permanent retainer top and bottom
•Essix retainers top and bottom 16 hr/day for a year and then nightly afterwards.

Had my 1st adjustment yesterday:

1) Broken bracket replace on top tooth
2) Same wire kept on top teeth
3) Thicker wire on bottom teeth
4) O-Rings placed on top brackets (metal o-rings on ceramic brackets)
5) Bite Ramps added to the molars (on top of what I already had). Already broke them on both sides in my sleep (I knew that was going to happen). Leaving as is till next appointment in May. Used to create space because of an overbite/crossbite. That space is still present with the bite ramps that are still left.
6) Had a tooth turning grey in color - XRay was done. No concerns, but monitoring on that tooth now. O-Ring not placed on that tooth.

I've got some mild pain on one of my front teeth, plus the tooth that had the bracket broken (these two teeth are side by side).
