New member: 27 and getting braces
Hi all,
I'm hoping to join the metal mouth club soon. I've been for an initial consultation to discuss invisible braces however I'm going back for another consultation this weekend to speak to the dentist that specialises in lingual braces add it think that's my preferred option.
I've always wanted braces even as a kid. But we were never taken to the dentist as children. I was 21 the first time in went to avoid dentist and that was an emergeny as an abscess has erupted and I looked like the elephant Man.
I have a boyfriend that i love very much but I hadn't told him about it until tonight. I had been putting it off again and again. I find it very difficult to talk about my teeth. I'm ashamed and embarrassed by them. He told me I was prefect as I was. :-) I think he's a bit taken aback as I've never even mentioned it to him before.
I have very crowded teeth in the bottom. On top needs straightening too but it's not as bad.
I'm quite excited and I feel now I've taken that I've taken
That first step in eager to get started.

Re: New member: 27 and getting braces
Hello!!!
I'm 28 and I've been in braces for 7 weeks!! I love it and you will learn to love it too because you will see progress quickly, it's amazing!!
Don't worry about what people think, since being braced so many adults have approached me and said "Wow I wish I could have a brace". I am in a relationship am getting married in Nov (Hence the brace) my fiancé is soooo supportive, we laugh about it and when I have bad days he is there for me. You will be surprised at the amount of support you get!
Be proud you have made this step because like you for years I've been very self-conscious of my teeth, always smiling with my mouth closed or pouting!! Lol.
You can do it!! Good Luck and enjoy the journey.... I know it will be worth it in the end!!
Ps. You will be aware of your brace more than others will!!

Re: New member: 27 and getting braces
I am also 27 and will soon be getting braces too! I have already had my initial consultation with my Orthodontist and that was a month ago. I needed serious time to think about the impact the braces would have on my life. I am glad that I am not the only young adult getting braces. Good luck to you and happy smiles in your future!
Re: New member: 27 and getting braces
I have my second consultation in a couple of hours. This time with the linguals specialist. I'm strangely relaxed about it. I was as nervous as hell at the first one.
The more I've researched it, the more I'm becoming set on the idea of linguals. So I guess the only thing I'm really nervous about it is not being able to get linguals for some reason. I'm nervous about price bring a factor. As I only have a very rough idea of costs so far.
I know what I can afford on finance, I'm just nervous that it may be more than that.
I'm also nervous about not beinf an ideal candidate for linguals. I think they should be fine on top but I have very crowded teeth in the bottom. Some have rotated quite alot and I can't see how a bracket would fit in the back. But I guess we'll see what they have to say.
Wish me luck!

Well, back to the drawing board.
After meeting with the dentist that does the lingual braces, he's said he doesn't like to do lingual braces anymore and would probably refer me to someone else. Which is highly disappointing. Wish I hadn't wasted my time.
I guess maybe I had a lucky escape, I wasnt that keen on him. And if he's saying he can't be bothered with them anymore, I don't think I want to give him my business even if I were to go with the ceramics.
Guess I better get looking around then... I'm really quite ddisappointed. I was all rared up and ready to go. :-(

Re: New member: 27 and getting braces
I'm sorry it hasn't worked out with linguals so far. I got my braces last year at 26 (top clear/bottom metal) and have been very happy with them. Hope you find an orthodontic plan you are comfortable with!

Re: New member: 27 and getting braces
I can definitely relate to feeling anxious about getting braces!! I have a bit of a spacey smile....my ortho says if my mouth were a garage, there are just not enough cars to fill it up. Not sure if that means my mouth is too big or my teeth or too small...Either way, my teeth seemed fine until I got my wisdom teeth removed around age 20. Ever since then, I've noticed spaces developing here and there, and one really big one between my right bottom canine and the bicuspid next to it....a gap of over 4 mm. Because the gap was on the side of my mouth, it wasn't noticeable to other people looking at me straight on, or even at all...but it always bothered me. I also had anxiety about the space getting bigger over time. I asked my dentist about it and she said "well, teeth move your whole life"....so i guess that was her nice way of saying "it's possible for the gap to get bigger". I also recently got engaged so I figured if I was really serious about getting braces, I had to act fast so I could be finished treatment before my wedding day! I had consults with a few orthos. I was told I could have my treatment done in 12 months, but only with ceramics....Invisalign would take significantly longer (this was my first choice for treatment). I was still on the fence about it....everyone said "you look fine, why do you need braces", but I knew the gaps would bother me if I didn't do something about it. I also learned from my ortho that I have a "deep bite" - my front teeth overlap a bit too much with my bottom teeth when I close my teeth....so getting braes would have the added bonus of correcting this. So...I decided to do it! Got the braces put on today (ceramics on top and bottom), and I'm 26! I was struggling with the idea of braces before I got them put on...I have been very anxious the last couple of weeks leading up to it. But now that the braces are on, I feel a strange sense of relief....like I can handle this! And I am glad the process is started.....now the countdown is really on!! For my wedding, AND for my braces to come off!!
On a side note, if anyone can tell me how to make a countdown thing as your signature, that'd be great!! I can't seem to figure it out, even after reading the FAQs!

Re: New member: 27 and getting braces
I'm 27 and I have been braced for 3 long months I have linguals in my upper jaw and ceramics in my lower. I was too very anxious before getting them, but now I seem to forget about them being there ... some of the time. Good luck!
Re: New member: 27 and getting braces
Well I've been in touch with a few more orthos. Found a few more nearby that do linguals. Just need to get a consultation booked.
Eager to get going now, I'm getting frustrated.

Well im 32 and getting my 1st extraction for 4 bicuspids tml! treating crowding and bimaxillary protrusion.
Re: New member: 27 and getting braces
:) aww I'm 27, married, two kids. I wasn't expecting to get a brace as my teeth are pretty straight but my right canine tooth never came out and my dentist referred me to a hospital as she thought it could cause problems in the future.
I was really nervous about getting them and having a gap but after the initial shock when you first get them in you start to see the difference and you don't mind.
People are so supportive too, a lot talk about when they had braces as a child and many who didn't have them would like them now.
My daughter is 6 and I let her choose my colours. And I got asked to pay to get into her school disco last week....embarrassing but funny! So some people will assume you are a lot younger if you look fairly young already! But laugh it off :)

Re: New member: 27 and getting braces
Haha ditsy! That's so funny!
Quick update, I've been for two consultations at what seems like rather an excellent orthodontist which is right by my workplace. I've got a quote for £6000 for Linguals top and ceramic lower. That includes bonded and nighttime retainers after they're removed. I've been researching my finance options but I think I'm going to go ahead with the finance plan that they offer and spread the cost over three years. I would like to make bigger repayments and do it in a shorter amount of time but my boyfriend and I are hoping to buy our first house within the next year so I need to be realistic.
I'm really excited to get started. I'm also changing my regular dentist. I wasn't particularly happy with the last and I think that's what me off going for a while. So I've opted for a dentist that is closer to work with more flexible appointments.
So now I just need to confirm the go ahead with the ortho and out down the £1300 deposit. So eager to get started now!

Update: I'm booked in for Wednesday 8th April for xmas and impressions! So excited. I also have a check up and clean booked for later that day. Do you think it's a problem that my clean and check up is after the impressions or does it not matter?
So friggin excited!!! Can't wait!
