Optional SARPE. To get or not?

#1 Post by snapdresser »

Anyone know what the indications are for SARPE? I'm wondering if I should get SARPE or not. My doc told me I "could", but it's a long drawn out procedure compared to jumping right to the LeFort I/BSSO/Genio. She thinks my results would still be good without SARPE but I know my palette is narrow and I could benefit from the surgery. I'm wondering if it's so narrow that it's frequently done in similar cases. Anyone know the measurement cutoff for when SARPE is indicated? I'm willing to go through the time, effort, pain, and money if that's what I need to do to get good results!

Thanks,

SARPE is usually indicated where palatal expansion greater than 5mm is needed.

Needed for what? To make your teeth match up? My teeth already match up, but my palette is narrow. I think I'm going to go without because of the potential for instability/additional complications.

When more than 5mm of expansion is needed that's when they decide on SARPE over Lefort 1.

"Needed" to get to where? Needed to get your upper teeth to match up with the bottom ones? Needed to get to some standard width "norm"? What's the goal measurement?

To get your upper teeth to match with your bottom teeth. It's to correct crossbite.

Yes for anatomical reasons. Some people get SARPE for cosmetic reasons such as a wider smile.

Met with the orthodontist yesterday and he said he wouldn't recommend it since I don't have a crossbite. Didn't bring it up for cosmetic reasons cuz I don't think I want the year in braces and potential instability/complications for what would only really be a minor improvement. a 5mm increase for me would make my smile pretty huge, I feel like lol
