Re: How long did you find it difficult to eat for?
I have had my braces for almost two months (just had my second adjustment today) and its still rough for me to eat. Every day I have different sore teeth so it can be a struggle. I am sure its different for everyone. I have never know the struggle of eating a burger until these braces haha I mean who pulls apart their burger into tiny pieces?? lol needless to say I eat those at home to avoid looking like a weirdo lol...but hey it will all be worth it when these bad boys come off!
This is me. The first thing I'm going to do when I get them off is eat a huge burger with no knife and fork!
6 weeks down and it's still no easier to eat. It's not as painful as day one, but there is still no chewing anything that isn't soft and absolutely no use of my front 4-6 teeth. I can't floss them and it hurts to even apply more than light pressure when I brush.
My ortho has said changing to the silver wire will help with this but I don't see how. I love food, I always have and I can say now, I don't enjoy eating anymore :(

I feel ya. My teeth are pretty much sore all of the time. I mean I can handle it but it definitely make eating a bit harder than before and heaven forbid biting off a piece of food with my front teeth. Not happening. No way no how haha. Brushing was never painful for me and flossing only hurt the first week because my teeth were so tight and sore. The most painful part of all of this for me has been my adjustments, which nobody else seems to have problems with. I guess I'm just weirdLH2015 wrote:autumn9285 wrote:I have had my braces for almost two months (just had my second adjustment today) and its still rough for me to eat. About a fortnight, and that's with bite blocks. Kinda good but I was also pretty happy about losing half a stone after a week of soup and smoothies lol, which has now all piled back on and then some.

Lots of people here have discomfort after an adjustment. Not weird at all! Take some ibuprofen about an hour or so before your adjustment. It will help. When I got the word that I was entering the active gap closure phase for my extraction gaps, I was excited for my power chains...until I got home. I made sure to take some Advil before that appointment and I still walked out pretty sore (probably a combination of new wires that I wasn't expecting, first time power chains, and first time elastics all in one appointment)...I'm a real sissy when it comes to mouth pain, so I'm not surprised that I was pretty much useless the rest of the day. For whatever reason, the pain just took everything out of me and I felt exhausted the rest of the day and a good portion of the next. Eating was a whole new experience again...really weird combination of feeling like I could probably eat anything as long as I wanted all of my teeth to fall out even though the braces would keep them from going anywhere.autumn9285 wrote: The most painful part of all of this for me has been my adjustments, which nobody else seems to have problems with. It's not the post adjustment soreness that hurts me, it's during the appointment foe adjustments. My teeth are always so sore going in and them pulling and pushing is just downright painful. Most people tell me they don't experience this during their adjustments.EWUgal15 wrote:Lots of people here have discomfort after an adjustment. Not weird at all! Oh man, I hear you, autumn9285. My last adjustment the ortho was really ambitious about moving me up to bigger wires, and engaging the wires into my more rotated teeth was awful! So much pushing and tugging! I went home and had some ibuprofen and an adult beverage and felt a little better.
Re: How long did you find it difficult to eat for?
It has gotten better for me with time, but I've had this in the past. Especially when I was having rotation corrected on a premolar...autumn9285 wrote:It's not the post adjustment soreness that hurts me, it's during the appointment foe adjustments. Well it's definitely good to know that I'm not the only one!EWUgal15 wrote:It has gotten better for me with time, but I've had this in the past. Re: How long did you find it difficult to eat for?
Im expecting to have a long time before I can eat anything comfortable or for that Matter even chew anything with bite turbos making it so I currently have no teeth that make contact plus the sizeable gap towards the front on my smile (I can almost fit my pinky in there when im biting down (not even forcibly))
Lots of crimes here
1. The upper molars bite too far ahead of the lower molars
2. Missing teeth #s 9, 14, and, 29
3. Open bite
4. Upper midline left of center
5. Lower midline right of center
6. Upper and lower teeth not straight
Sentence - 24 months, turned to 27 month.
Braces removed since 11/06/17

Re: How long did you find it difficult to eat for?
Well finally after just over 2 months, I can eat most things without discomfort. Still have no use of my front four unless it's soft food such as crustless bread.
Just went for my first adjustment, my 'fangs' have moved really well, but my other teeth not so much, so I've had no wire change, just lovely clean ligs. I know the white wire takes linger, so I'm moving over to the light silver wire next time. I find the lig changes very painful, I have to get him to stop so I can take a breather. I've got very deep roots so my teeth are really sensitive, he says. Been told to pop a couple of painkillers about an hour before next time. He taught me a really helpful tip, which is to completely relax your shoulders, take some deep breaths and focus on something really difficult such as thinking the alphabet backwards whilst they work. It really does help the pain!

It's funny the things you take for granted before braces! I'm four weeks in and getting used to them but still have trouble eating things. I also pull my burger into little pieces. It might be better for me to just not eat them lol.

It took me 3 to 4 months to be able to get used to the braces enough to start eating regular foods again. I was pretty much on a liquid diet for months and lost 10 lbs.
