Delayed Extractions - Is This Normal?

#1 Post by occamsblazer »

Hey guys,

Just wanted to find out some experiences of folks who've had extractions during their treatment...

I'm currently 6 weeks into my braces journey, and my orthodontist had mentioned getting 2 pre-molar extractions 6-9 months into having braces...my front teeth have already moved loads in the first month, which is good in some ways, but also means by overjet is becoming way more pronounced (I'm really starting to hate it). I had my first adjustment on Monday and asked my ortho whether it could be done sooner but he maintained that the spaces wouldn't close yet and the bone wouldd become less malleable over time.

It's not that I don't trust him, it just seems like the majority of people get their extractions at the very beginning of their treatment and their teeth turn out fine, I still don't really understand why I have to wait so long with my overcrowded teeth that are dying to stretch out! Has anyone else had this happen?

When my boyfriend went in for his consult, he was told he would need extractions (upper pre-molars and his 3 wisdom teeth). Since his upper pre-molars were healthy and one of his second molars needed a root canal, the orthodontist said they could take out the tooth that needed a root canal instead of the wisdom tooth behind it and the pre-molars then close the molar gap and fix his upper crowding. Well, the surgeon screwed up and took the wisdom tooth instead of the tooth that needed a root canal. When we went back to the orthodontist to find out what we should so after the mess up, the orthodontist said he would try to fix the crowding in the upper arch without extractions and if he couldn't do it, the teeth would need to come out...so sometimes extractions do happen after braces are on.

My boyfriend hasn't actually started treatment yet, so we're still in the waiting phase to see if he'll need more extractions...

Not me, but my good friend also currently has braces. She got braced in October, and she will be getting extractions sometime in the near future. So no, it doesn't seem to be outside the realm of normal to get extractions done AFTER being braced for awhile!
