Sleeping with braces

#1 Post by adultbracesxo »

I have noticed more and more that when I wake up, I either have a bite mark on my lip, or my tongue will have a lump from biting that.
I've had my braces on for about 4 months now, and I just started experiencing this sort of things. Has anyone else had this problem, and have you found a way to prevent it?

Sorry - I have not had that issue. I feel more like I'm peeling the inside of my lips from off my braces in the morning which is still odd.

Yes! I just started noticing about a week or so ago that I kept waking up while biting on the inside of my bottom lip with my canines on the right side. No idea why. It turned into a canker sore, grrrr.

I've not had the problem you describe whilst sleeping with braces however having braces seems to have caused me to start grinding my teeth in my sleep, it actually wakes me up most nights which is worrying, I am going to mention it to my ortho at my next visit

I'm a side sleeper and have found I'm getting braces marks on the insides of my cheeks. So I sleep with silicone wax on the back brackets (the worst spots) and a bit over my canines because those rub the most. It help prevent the indentations. I'm guess it may be like this the whole time because I'll never learn to sleep on my back.

That's strange.. I have always grinded my teeth, and could have something to do with why I am biting myself.. teeth are adjusting and all.

Well I hope we can both come to a conclusion on why this is happening! I fear I am going to wake up with a bloody mouth soon!

I think I used to be a teeth clencher while I sleep because I'd wake up with headaches. Haven't had one since I got my braces on because I can't connect my molars anymore. But I do wake up with my front teeth biting down on the bumpers along my front lowers. I have to remember to talk to my ortho next time I go in for an adjustment to see how we can keep the problem solved in the future.

I was braced 3 weeks ago and my biggest issue with sleeping with them is clenching my teeth together. When I wake up in the morning some of my molars are actually touching but as the day progresses, only the very tips of my back molars touch. Quite strange!

I've noticed that my cheeks on my left side are that way in the morning too. Last night I covered that side in wax, and it was a million times better this morning!

My problem right now (being new to braces) is falling asleep.. it seems like it takes me 3x as long as normal.. and also i sleep on my stomach and lay on 1 side of my face.. which pushes the braces into my cheek (my cheeks are hating life right now ugh)

A couple of times I've woken myself up by biting my tongue, which is definitely not something I did before braces. I'm guessing its because my bite is shifting constantly (even if just a little bit) and my tongue has to keep up? Otherwise, my big problem with sleeping is that I usually wake up with my lower lip glued to my brackets. Drinking lots of water usually helps, but sometimes I'll go to bed thirsty and when I wake up I literally have to peel my lip away from the braces. Luckily, it's just uncomfortable/weird and not painful.
