Making ortho remove braces?

Making ortho remove braces?
Hi there,
So I am wondering if I should remove my braces against ortho wishes or not. Basically I had braces for 5 years and then had them off for 1 year. I didn't have a retainer, so my over jet came back a bit. Then I got braces on again as prep for MMA surgery. I got them on the second time in September. I also had 4 teeth extracted, but the spaces are closed now. My surgery was June 10th, so I am pretty much healed now. On August 27th I will leave for an exchange year in korea. My ortho wants me to keep my braces on this entire year, and then resume treatment when I return. Is it just me or is this dumb? My teeth are straight, gaps are closed, bite is good, why do I need to keep them on? I've had braces for 7 years, I would really like to get them off. If I kept them on it'd be 9 YEARS. Could you give me advice? Would it be counterintuitive to make the ortho take them off early? I asked my maxillofacial surgeon and he thinks they should be taken off. It is just the ortho.

It sounds like the orthodontist still sees things that need to be corrected. I would definitely call the office and schedule some time to sit down with the doctor and a treatment coordinator to have a conversation about what still needs to be done and what kind of time frame that could be accomplished in, then make the decision about removing the braces or not. Ultimately, you are the patient and you have the final say. If everything is the way you want it, make the call to have the braces removed and wear retainers.
To play devil's advocate for a moment: after everything you've done, it seems like a let down to quit partway through. The hard stuff is over, but I definitely understand it's frustrating to have been in braces for 7 years. As much as I love mine, I doubt I would make it that long. If the orthodontist does see things that still need to be corrected, maybe he wants to keep them on to prevent having to charge you for another round of treatment after your trip to Korea. As long as you're in active treatment, he probably won't charge you any more than you were already quoted. That said, if you were to remove the braces now and need to re-enter treatment after you return from Korea, what would the cost be like? If you don't plan to re-enter treatment, then no big deal. Just make sure you wear your retainers religiously.

Here are photos of my teeth before and now. Do you think I should keep them on? I am conflicted. If I take them off it will be too expensive to get them put back on, so they will be off permanently.

I think things definitely look better after the second round, but I'm not a dental professional, so I can't give you any kind of diagnosis. I would have a serious chat with your orthodontist about your options, find out what they are looking at to want to continue treatment and make a decision based on pros/cons of keeping and pros/cons of getting them off.

Your surgery turned out so good! Mine was two days before yours and I have to say that my orthodontist has his work cut out for him. Since mine was a 3 piece lefort, there's a lot of things he needs to move around, especially with my new bite. Some teeth need to tilt inward and some outward, for things to line up properly.
Being 7 weeks post-op today, I definitely would not feel comfortable if they removed my braces. I've been chewing pretty decently on my rear teeth, but I'm very hesitant on biting into anything more than a PB&J sandwich with my front teeth, that's what I've been cleared for. The roof of my mouth is very numb around where my teeth are in the front, as well as my nose fees like someone punched me square in the middle of it. I'm trying to remain positive, but time is moving by so slowly, even with me being back at work. I feel like it's been forever since I got my splint off, but that was only 2 weeks ago. I wish I saw results as great as yours this soon!

Korea sounds fun!! I want to visit. I took my braces off myself and i beleive it was the weong decision. Your teeth will shift and move in a position you may not like. I really suggest keeping them on or seeing another orthodontist and asking them if they agree for you to have them off sooner maybe. Just dont take them off yourself and have them removed by the ortho so they can give you a retainer atleast to avoid shifting.

Re: Making ortho remove braces?
Will your orthodontist fit you with retainers before you go? If not, then your bite will probably shift. You haven't said if your orthodontist gave you any specifics about his reasoning for keeping them on (such as wanting to fix more things)?? If he can't give you sufficient justification, then yes, have him remove them, but ONLY if you will be getting retainers.

Went to the ortho today, and I'm getting the braces off on the 15th! Ugh, I'm so excited. I will get retainers, so no worries there.
