Archwire constantly popping out of my last molar bracket

#1 Post by cjtramont »

I'm about 10 months into treatment and have the thick rectangular wire on the top and bottom (my online profile says I have the .019 x .025 wire). Since my adjustment two weeks ago the top wire has popped out 3 times already. It wasn't this bad when I had the thinner round wires. I thought the thick rectangular wires were supposed to fit like a glove in the bracket? It's an hour drive to see my orthodontist for a 2 minute appointment, is there a fix I can do at home?

Many thanks!

Are you chewing anything particularly hard? I had that happen to me a year ago because of brownie crust (it was worth it, though!).

You could try to clip off the wire with wire cutters but be very careful. When it happened to me, they ended up clipping the wire and just leaving it clipped off.

I wish I could chew anything hard. Last two weeks all I ate was mashed potatoes, kraft dinner and hot dogs without the bun. I tried the clipping but my scissors weren't cutting the rectangular wire.

I had this problem much more with thinner wires but I used to pop them back in with tweezers. Is that an option?

Sounds like they cut it too short; call your ortho, explain what's happening, and they should be able to schedule you for a quick appointment to get a new one put in.
