Not wearing retainers?
Hi so i had braces before and stoped wearing retainers and teeth crowded slightly NO GAPS
This time round dentist done IPR on my lower teeth which left big gaps which are closed now,
BUT What will happen if i dont wear retainers on lower teeth and they shift?
Will teeth have big gaps since i done IPR?

Re: Not wearing retainers?
If you want your teeth to stay straight after you braces, wear your retainers. End of story. You can't predict what changes will happen if you don't, especially on as you get older, but they will shift. Chances are you won't have huge gaps because IPR doesn't take off that much really. But still.
Wear them.
Wear them.
Re: Not wearing retainers?
As someone who is going through orthodontics for a second time, as you are... wear your retainers. Just don't even risk it, it is really not worth it! I don't think anyone on this board can really say whether or not your teeth will move, especially not how exactly they will move, but as you know since your teeth started to crowd again, they can and do move!

Wear your retainer or youll regret it like me i had to get braces a second time
Re: Not wearing retainers?
Is there a reason that you are considering not wearing a retainer? Is it uncomfortable, or are you dissatisfied with its appearance? Or are you concerned it would interfere somehow with your life-style? I've been debraced for over a year at this point, and wear my Vivera retainer only at night. I really would not want to think about a relapse -- I've paid my dues already! But to your question, I think it is unpredictable as others have mentioned. Best of luck to you in any event!

there is a reason a partiular reason actually, i paid a dentist £3200 to correct all my teeth only to find out i have "6 month smiles" which only focuses on front teeth, and the only problem i had with the the front teeth was one upper lateral incisor was pushed back... instead of my dentist pushing this teeth forward he pushed my other lateral incisor and canines back to make it more level.... hes made my mouth smaller and narrow on the top and bottom. i keep getting tounge pain because my tounge is constantly trying to find space by pushing against my teeth.djspeece wrote:Is there a reason that you are considering not wearing a retainer? most embrassing thing is taking the braces off and getting them again after 1 year when i can afford them again only for people to ask me why am i wearing braces AGAIN and will laugh at the fact i wasted £3200
Re: Not wearing retainers?
If it's any consolation I doubt that you are the only person who has wasted money on 6 Month Smiles. I'm a bit surprised that the orthodontics community does not do more to protect the public -- both here in the US and across the pond -- but suspect it is rooted in the fact that general dentists provide referrals to them for cases which are clearly beyond 6 month smiles. It really gives dentistry and orthopedics a bad name, in my opinion.

Re: Not wearing retainers?
You only had your braces for 7 months...they will definitely move if you do not wear your retainer.
I had my braces for 4 years...and they have been off for 3 years..with little changes because I wore my retainer everyday (until it broke at the 2 yr mark) and I am now using my positioner. I think the longer one has braces, the better chance of the teeth staying in place.
Unfortunately, in your posititon, it sounds like you may need to get braces again if you want to get things put into perfect placement. It stinks because you already spent money but maybe it won't cost as much because you had already worn the 6 month smiles...? Either way, it is one of those "learning experiences" we have to deal with in life.
Good luck!

Im really disapointed more at the fact that i cant get back my "old" lower teeth before IPR sincr IPR shaves your teeth and makes it smaller... hes done to much unnessary IPR
