Mouth looks narrow

#1 Post by Seasaltmind »

Ive had my braces on four months but I still have had a narrow mouth. I just got my arch wire but I have not seen any difference.

Some background: i had two teeth removed to make room to fix an overbite. This was during my last set of braces. The spaces closed and my mouth wasnt so narrow. When i got them off my teeth must have fallen backwards.

I have braces again (on since july) and im hoping they will widen my smile again. Is it likely they will? I mean if they were once looking very good with my last pair of braces it must be possible for them to look as good again, no? Their state is just not want i want at all right now and i feel a bit hopeless and like maybe ill never be happy with them again.

I did wear rubber bands with my last pair to align my upper and bottom jaw. At this time the upper teeth began to meet the lower and they rested on eachother. This made my mouth look very nice.

How long would it take to widen the smile and how is this even achieved?
I know i should ask my doctor but i dont see him until the end of November.

I had been treated for bimax protrusion, with 4 premolars removed. My mouth has become smaller after treatment.
But my arch become slightly rounder thanks to the wires, to avoid my tongue to feel squeezed.

My top jaw is actually narrow but I am a special case because my bottom jaw is overgrown. I'll be getting surgery for both my bottom and top jaw.

Has your ortho said anything about surgery? Or only using brace equiptment? (Headgear etc)

I feel my smile got narrower after 3 years with braces. But I did not have any extractions. What made my smile narrower was that the upper jaw is protrudent, so it pulls the lips forward and they dont have enough elasticity to stretch to sides as far as they used to.

That makes sense. My lips are like that right now but my doctor did say he will widen the area and im getting rubber bands my next visit to correct the protruding area.

Yes theyre changing the shape of my arch too. Mine was a small u shape and hes goinf to widen it.

I feel you on the cramped tongue. Feels super awkward.

Thats great! Sounds like your ortho is addressing the issue. Did you express your concerns to the ortho? I feel i trusted mine too much and he forgot the reason why i was getting braces in the first place. I cant emphasize enough the importance of ongoing, nonstop communication. :)

Hope you will achieve a large U shape as I achieved. Your smile won't be narrow even if two premolars had been extracted.

Cool! Yeah this is my second time with braces. The first time i remember my mouth also being narrow at one point but then when i had the bands my mouth looked so good and the overbite wasnt so bad. Im hoping they can helpe me achieve that again before surgery. Feels so far from that point. :( i mean if my mouth looked that way before it can be that good again right? And my doctor knows that? I get anxiety about it.

He told me im getting my rubber bands at my next visit in january to start correcting the bite. I cant wait!

Do you remember at what point your arch widened? Did you get bands too?

On the end of my treatment, both my arches were widened at the level on the remained premolar and the first molar. My arches had a simple U shape before and now they achieve a rounder horseshoe shape.
Here's a photo of my new occlusion.
