Changes in face during braces treatment

#1 Post by amanygh »

Hello I currently at the end of by braces treatment but I am unsatisfied with some aesthetical changes and I do now know what to do. I got 4 tooth extractions 2 on top, two at the bottom. Throughout my treatment i always felt like my face was changing but I was never too sure, but especially during the few month I saw my nose become much more prominent and I now sure it hasn't been all in my head. I have a wide face and I feel like my cheekbones have somewhat flattened making my face less sculpted in an attractive way. When I look at my face from a side angle I can see that a lost some cheek volume. I had a recedeed chin to begin with but it has become more receeded looking. I brought this all up to my orthodonist a few days ago and he responded saying the stuff on the internet is bs. I really do believe braces have affected these changes. I am suppose to get my braces off soon and I don't know what to do, i prolonged taking them off so I could figure this out before it's too late. I really want to fix these changes I have no idea who I go to now , another orthodonist? Please if you have any advice let me know, thanks!

Sometimes extracting bicuspids is recommanded and sometimes not. What was your initial problem?

4 extractions are generally compulsory when you suffer from maxillar and mandibular (so both jaws) protrusion and not a simple overbite, because when your chin is OK, retruding the lower jaw risks on creating a receeded-looking chin. On the contrary, when you suffer from bimax protrusion as I suffered, your chin will become more pronounced if you extract bottom premolars. Ask advice to another orthodontist to correct the receeded chin. Ask if the Class II elastics are able to move your lower jaw forward to end a more important chin etc...

I too have braces @59yrs of age for 6 mos now. My whole face has changed not to mention my smile is nothing like it used to be. I had a very broad beautiful smile with some spacing and did the 6mo smile w/my dentist (not an ortho and boy do I regret that) to close the spacing. Now my chin looks like it has receded, below cheeks is hollow, arch is so narrow and teeth are tilting inward. I talked to another ortho and he said he can fix it but, I am so scared to let anyone touch my mouth now. This is horrifying, like a bad cosmetic surgery gone wrong that you see in magazines. I don't even look like the same person. Before, total strangers would walk up to me just to tell me I had a great smile. Wish I had never had this done. Made me age by 10yrs. I have never looked my age but now I do. I am just sick! Stress about it all day long and cry about it every day. I am so depressed, I don't want to go anywhere in public and so embarrassed at work. They just look at me with pity. NO ONE has approached me to tell me how great my teeth look they just don't say anything. I just don't know what to do now. My dentist says that nothing has changed. I think they all deny it because of law suits but it is hard to sue a Dentist. They collaborate!!!! I had 3 orthos refuse to give me a consult/2nd opinion because I am currently in treatment. Anybody have any good advice? I sure could use some.

That is terrible I am so sorry, I feel that way too. I am scared that reversing the changes will lead to me being happy with results agains, as for now I'm going to visit a few other orthos and ask for advice. I am worried I am gonna get the same answer from different orthos as well. I know that if i dont try my best to fix it I will end up depressed and I tired of being unhappy with myself. Also wow I had no idea they would refuse? I hope this doesn't happen to me too. I wish i had advice to offer but im currently in the same boat if i find a solution I will inform you. I would say keep seeking different opinions until you feel more confident in making a decision.

I have tried calling up so orthodonists to take an appointment. I managed to get one appointment. But when i was trying to get a different appointment the secretary was probing me as to the reason why and once I explained she talked to the doctor. I was disappointed once she finished talking to him she said he would not be checking my case as it is unethical for him to judge another orthodonist's work. I'm worried the same thing will happen with the other orthodontist. I don't understand how else can you transfer files if they aren't even willing to look at you? Am i suppose to just get my braces removed then approach new orthodontists?

I saw some people talk about sleep apnea on this forums I went to look up what is this and I now realizing i might have this problem. It doesn't happen frequently but sometimes I feel like i have to put effort into breathing. I've also waken up a couple of times because of feeling unable to breathe. I had no idea this could correlate to orthodontic treatment. Any advice on what to do ?

I think the next step would be to see your primary care physician who can help you evaluate the sleep apnea, or refer you to a specialist. You'll probably need a prescription to get the equipment you need for night-time wear. Best of luck to you.

In my opinion, don't hesitate asking advice to another orthodontist as soon as possible!

Hi Ama - Have you had any luck getting in to see other orthodontists? I have an apt with another one in the morning. So sorry you are going thru this. It is absolutely devastating! I wish I had never done this. I am going to try to get my current Dentist to refund me the money I paid him. Not sure if her will. It is going to cost me about $6500.00 more just to fix what he has done. That is just one quote. I guess is could go higher. I hope you are having some success with your situation. God Bless!
