permanent retainer while braces are still on?

Hello - did anyone out there get a permanent retainer placed while the braces are still on?
I guess it is because my front teeth are done moving but other movements still need to take place? It feels like a lot and I am nervous about it!! I get so anxious over every move related to my braces - anyone else?
Does anyone know anything about this?

Well, my daughter had to get braces for the second time recently because her jaw grew and her bite was not right. Her teeth were perfectly straight. So the ortho put braces on again but didn't remove the bonded retainer on her bottom teeth. I thought it was weird and asked. She told me it's fine. So. ...I guess it's common? ? It looks like a lot to keep clean and my daughter hates flossing with having braces AND a retainer! How are things going with you having both?

Yes I had my bottom permanent retainer placed one month and then two months later they placed my top. I'm just now getting my braces off in 3 weeks. I wouldn't worry about it, it seems to be pretty normal!
