Bracing myself at 25!

#1 Post by lydiamazing »

Hello!

I was told by @UKAdultBraces on Twitter that this is the best place to find a supportive community of brace-wearing adults. This is brilliant news, because I'm 25, I'm getting braces for the first time next week, and I could really do with knowing some people who can empathise. So here I am!

I plan to have a browse around and find some people to chat with, but wanted to make a quick introduction post first. My name is Lydia, I live in the south of England and I work for a university. I'm planning to make video diaries about my experience on my YouTube account (not sure I'm allowed to post a URL, but the username is quipsandsentences). I've already made a couple so feel free to go and have a watch :)

This isn't so much a decision I've made for cosmetic reasons, but because I have multiple baby teeth, which don't have adult replacements behind them. When they fall out, there'll just be gaps, which isn't great. So I'm having the baby teeth taken out, and the adults moved into the right place so that the gaps can be filled correctly. It was a case of 'Have this done, or all your baby teeth will fall out by the time you're thirty'. Not much choice really!

Would be great to hear from some like-minded people, especially anyone who has tips for being confident as a working adult while wearing braces.

Lydia

Hi Lydia,

Welcome to the club :-1 . I Can't help you so much as I also got the braces two days back and I’m older than you. (: My office friend suggested me to do it as he also wearing braces and believe it won't look bad. You need to carefully taking food as some might can break your braces or stuck and will create an issue and make this process lengthy. you have to give up like caramel chocolates, candies, soda can, Nuts, pizza etc. etc. And believe me you will want to eat these things too much while wearing braces, although you never ate these since year  So eat t Other than this everything is fine and normal.

Hi! I'll definitely be following your videos. I've been a bit addicted to brace youtube videos since I decided to take the plunge. I'm also 25, and I'll be getting my brace next month.
Upper arch braced (traditional metal) on 17/02/17
Debonded 17/01/18 with a fixed retainer
Estimated treatment time 18 months, actual time 11 months :-*

I'm 37 and got my brace last Monday. I felt nervous the day after going in to work (I work in an office) as I wasn't used to the feeling of it, my top lip felt like it stuck out like a shelf and whenever I spoke it seemed to stick to it so I would end up pulling weird faces lol. Nobody has said anything to me and as the week went on I got more used to speaking to my colleagues. As the days go on your get more used to it, and before long I'm sure I'll even forget it's there.
As for food, I have been quite lucky I can still chew on my back teeth to eat ( I have a partial brace on the front 6 teeth) but I have sat there at my desk and used a knife to cut my sandwich in to small chunks with not being able to bite in to it!!

Hi Lydia,

I'm 23 and also have braces. I've had them a little longer than you (around 8-9 months or so now) and from the UK.

I hope your braces went on ok!!

Grace
