Before and After Pictures - Upper and Lower Jaw Surgery for Overbite

#1 Post by Naderq »

For those of you wondering whether jaw surgery is worth it here are my before and after profile photos:

I went through upper, lower and genioplasty surgery 8 weeks ago to correct a severe overbite. It's been one of the hardest things I've gone through but when I see this picture it reminds me that it will all be worth it. Feel free to ask any questions!

looks great! I had my surgery a month ago and am still very swollen. How's your swelling at 8 weeks? I don't really notice it much

Hey Fixmenow,

I'm still pretty swollen. From the side you can't tell but it's noticeable from the front. After a month you should be pretty swollen still. At this rate I anticipate that by week 12 I should be 95% good. The 6 month mark is 99%. And in a year it'll be 100%

Hi Naderq,

Good to know you're still swollen at 8 weeks because right now I am still very swollen at 4 weeks, and couldn't imagine it all going down withing another 4 weeks. Those time lines give me some peace of mind knowing that I still have a long way to go, that I won't remain looking like a freak forever. lol

Double Jaw Surgery really is the ultimate test of patience! :-*

Have you been doing anything above and beyond to reduce swelling? All I'm doing right now is the occasional heat compress, and trying to drink lots of water, plus I bought some pineapple juice last night so I'll start drinking it today. I'm thinking of buying some Turmeric and Bromelain capsules for swelling, as well as some Vitamin K1 and Vitamin D3 Tablets, plus some Calcium tablets for bone re-growth.

Also, have you started TMJ physio yet? I just got a call from my orthodontist saying they've referred me to a TMJ physiotherapist for exercises, and to expect a call from them today.

I did all of that. LOL. It all helped to a degree and I think my swelling is making good progress. I also tried acupuncture but didn't see results and was also going to try Lymphatic Massage but decided I'll just let time work its magic. I've been doing self-massages.

My OS referred my to a physiotherapist. She said not to start until the 3 month mark but my first appointment is at 2.5months. I can't wait to get my mobility back.

That's interesting about your physio. I wonder why I am to go into physio at the 1.5 month point and you were recommended to go in at the 2.5/3 month point? I know doctors do things differently and that people heal at different rates, but I don't have much mobility at all yet. When my elastics are off I can barely fit two fingers in my mouth (my fingers aren't huge either). But I'm sure there must be a reason, otherwise my orthodontist wouldn't have decided to refer me so soon. I guess if it will help me recover faster than I'm game. I'll let you know how it goes and maybe you can do the same? I'm thinking that our experiences will be a lot different considering the difference in our recovery time.

Thanks for the post. I am hoping my ortho recommends surgery vs extraction after he sees my molds
