Should I buy a recliner to sleep on?

#1 Post by Jbird »

Well, they cost a lot and I have a wedge but it''s only 8 inches or do. Wonder how high I need my head up? Thanks.

A wedge pillow + one or two pillows is more than enough. I wouldn't get a recliner just for the surgery.

I concur with bighoss, a recliner is an unnecessary expense for the surgery (unless you secretly want a recliner anyways  ). I used 2 wedges on top of each other and it was perfect. I used an extra pillow under my knees to keep from sliding down on the wedges. Worked great. I went to 1 wedge after about 2 weeks anyways, so I wouldn't bother purchasing a recliner for 2 weeks of use.

Thanks snap. Did you carry your wedges back and forth between the bed and the couch? I really can't see me staying in my bedroom all day. Maybe I'll just get another wedge.

I stayed in bed literally for the first few days, only getting up to use the bathroom. After that I was back and forth between the couch in the living room and my bed. The back of the couch (or just sitting upright without a backrest) made the wedges unnecessary in the living room. The wedges were strictly for the bed and were really only needed for the nights (except for those first few days when I stayed in bed continuously). As long as you have a couch/futon/chair in your living room, I don't think you'll have an issue finding an acceptable place to sit during the daytime.

That's not to say you couldn't carry the wedges back and forth from your bed to your living room as needed. Shouldn't be a huge problem, at least after the first couple days.

A recliner is definitely comfortable after surgery, but I agree with the others that it's not necessary.

I bought this wedge pillow and it worked really well. One side is steeper than the other. I used the steep side for sitting in bed, and the less steep side for sleeping.

Thanks Jaime. I read your whole blog and it's been so helpful. I also watched your videos and just knowing what to expect takes away a lot of the fear. I ordered that wedge from amazon and they sent me the wrong one. It's the 7 inch one. So trying to decide whether to send it back or make it work by adding pillows. I can probably make it work with these neck pillows I have. Thanks.

That's really great to hear that my blog and videos were helpful...too bad Amazon sent the wrong thing. A couple months ago I ordered a hair product and they sent me dog shampoo. I tried not to take it personally!

Do Canadians use Mane and Tail? There's a horse shampoo that a lot of people use for themselves here in the US called Mane and Tail. Has a picture of a horse on the front. They sell it at Target.

Never heard of it. That's kind of hilarious, though.
