Hi guys,
I smoke about 5 a day (down from 20... trying to quit) and am looking to get ceramics soon. Even if I quit, most of my friends smoke so I'll still be around secondhand smoke... and so will my teeth!
I know that with ceramics, it's usually the ligatures themselves that stain. However, could the brackets themselves stain from smoking too? Are there any brands that don't?
Can't edit my original post - the ortho I had a consult with today uses Inovation-C self-ligating braces, they are made of aluminium and are super discreet. Anyone any experience with them staining?

I was just de-braced yesterday and im kind of a heavy smoker. I had ceramics, and had no issues with staining brackets. My powertrains and elastics would stain though.
The bigger issue may be with the decreased circulation to the gums as a result of the nicotine which is a powerful vasoconstrictor (tightens down blood vessels), which might result in slower remodeling/movement of your teeth -- but I am not certain if there is data to support that. You might want to speak to your ortho about the issue.
