Overjet fixable with only braces? Or is surgery necessary?

I'm 22 years old, and I had my first orthodontic consultation. I was given two options - either jaw surgery to move the lower jaw forward, or 2 extractions and moving the front teeth back and closing the gap.

As you can see it's very significant overjet, can a good outcome be created with just the extractions + braces?

Get second opinions from other reputable orthodontists in your area. Personally, if I were in your position I would avoid surgery at all costs if satisfactory correction is possible through only orthodontics. Jaw surgery is a huge burden and has some risks that aren't necessary unless your jaws affect sleep apnea, mental state (confidence, happiness, etc), or bite can only be corrected through surgery.

So in short my suggestion is: try to avoid surgery if possible.

My suggestion is get a second opinion before undergoing extraction.

I just made a post today about how extractions and movement of my upper jaw backwards affected my self esteem and mental health.

From personal experience, I would never recomend anyone extractions. Your face changes so much with the maxilla being moved backwards. My upper lip looks longer, my nose looks bigger, I don't have a wide smile anymore. I hate how my profile looks now. All because of the extraction and retraction.

I'm curious, did your orthodonthist inform you about your facial features looking alot different?

My overjet wasn't as severe as yours (if thats you on the pic), so I can only imagine the differences would be even more noticable in your situation..

Get another opinion. I regreat letting them extract 2 perfectly healthy teeth (didn't even have cavities).

Do some reaserch on bicuspid extractions and post a reply if you can find one case that WAS happy with the results.

Do reaserch about orthognathic surgery aswell. There are ups and downs.

All the best of luck to you!
