Help ! Extraction ?

#1 Post by krystal7krystal7 »

4 premolar extractions, Yes or No ?

My jaws are protruding. Not extremely bad but it's noticeable. Very thick lips make it worse.
Everyone thinks i'm in a bad mood all the time. Everyone be like "What's with your expression ? / Ughh why are you always angry/in bad mood ?/ Your expression put everyone into bad mood". And everyone means everyone including my mom.
Relatives, friends always say "can't you smile ?" or they make a huge fuss when I smile "see ? you look good when you smile ! Don't pout all the time!". Resting complain face is real but they just can't understand. I told them how huge my lips are and explained about protruding jaws. I would take picture from side and compare with normal people. I told them this is how I look normally.
But they never believe "Oh, You are pouting on purpose!!".
One time, I was just walking on the street and some boys imitated my lips/jaw and laughed out loud.

So, that's how stressful I am. And my orthodontist told me to think about 4 premolars extraction as he knows my concern. I agreed right away imagining to get better profile and no more bullying, no more crying.

But I found so many videos and forums talking about Sleep Apnea caused from extractions. Headache, neck pain, face deformation (I don't know what that is), and more problems that could happen after extraction.

Is it true ? Some people even reopened the space to relief the pain.
I want to look better but I don't want to risk to have Sleep Apnea or any pain that wouldn't go away unless the space is reopened.
I would rather be ugly than having sleep apnea & in pain.
But does that happen to everyone ? Then why would my ortho recommend to do it ? (He didn't force me to, he says it's not necessary but only because I was concerned by my appearance. So, he definitely didn't recommend it to get more money)

Please give me some advice or share your experience ?

You suffer from bimax protrusion? Are your teeth crowded or no?

Yes, bimax protrusion.
My teeth are slightly crowed but it could be fixed by braces alone.
My ortho only suggested extraction because I was concerned with my appearance.

I suffered exactly from the same problem as you before my treatment : bimax protrusion, very slight crowding and lip incompetence. If you want, we can talk more about it, I'll be pleased to share with you my experience.
I was treated with 4 bicuspids extracted, braces and elastics. Now I'm debraced. You will find my whole story here : http://www.archwired.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=50304
I don't have sleep apnea at all.

Yes please ! Let me know what to expect and what you think I should know.
I'm so scared but want to fix at the same time & don't know what to expect at all.

I do have a question. Do you get braces on right away after the extraction ?
I have braces on already. (I didn't want extraction at first, or haven't decided yet). Next month, I'm going to get a thicker wire & my ortho is saying I can have the extraction and get a new wire at the same time, on the same day. I think we shouldn't be tightening when there would be pain & swelling from extraction but he says it's fine. I'm a bit confused.

I was braced one month after my first extraction (one bicuspid was extracted per week) because eating with 4 teeth out and braces at the same time would be too difficult. I think you can ask him not to be tortured twice the same day.

I have extractions done, and i'm in the process of getting them closed. It's been 6 months and my bottom two have completely closed and my top two are almost closed as well; I still have a couple more months til i take off my braces entirely. I have not noticed a sunken face or hollow cheakbones. If anything, my jaw is more defined than it usually was. However, I did suffer from bimax protrusion and lip incompetence, so I do not recommend extractions unless you suffer from that, because then I understand why most people end up with horrible results. Much luck to you

I remember we talked together about extractions in cases of bimax protrusion and lip incompetence months before, when you hesitated opting for premolar extraction. So you finally decided to out your 4 first bicuspids? Are happy with the results? Do you wear elastics? How looks your profile now? I suffered from bimax protrusion and lip incompetence too and I opted to have my 4 first bicuspids extracted. And I noticed that my jawline has become more defined after the treatment too.

I remember! Your help was the reason I chose to go with it. I like the results so far, they still haven't closed, I wear bands and power chains right now. The only problem is a smaller arch. I noticed that my smile became less wider than before , its no big deal , but I'm to old for expanders . But, I still have a couple months left with braces so I'm very excited to take them off!

Seriously, that's my result which make you opting for premolar extractions? :D
Don't worry about the arch, as I said you and as you can see in my photos I have a smaller arch than before too and my smile has become less wide but all the facial changes completely worth it!
Don't hesitate sending photos when your braces will be off!
Moreover I've just sent you a mail about the treatment as I've found our discussion.
