Saddened by double jaw surgery results - who can relate?

#1 Post by Naderq »

Hi all,

I had double jaw surgery in Nov 16 to fix a large overbite. Immediately after the procedure I knew my midline was off. I kept raising it with my dismissive surgeon who brushed it off as minimal or swelling.

Well, almost a year later I am dealing with a completely assymetrical face - midline is off by 1.5mm (this may not seems like a lot but my face is very narrow), uneven lips, uneven nose, and a rotated jaws. This isn't what I signed up for. I feel so helpless I'm not sure what to do next? Has anyone had to do revision surgery? I really can't stop thinking about how I look. I feel so uncomfortable. I feel like gave up the symmetry I had before to gain a nice jaw - but the tradeoff doesn't seem worth it. I can't even take a picture with my iPhone camera because it flips the image and makes me look terrible. What do you guys recommend? Any opinions on revision?

I am not seeing what you are seeing. I think you look just fine!

The only thing I notice is that one of your front teeth is yellower than the rest. I would be more concerned with that than any of the other things you mention as it is more noticeable. Not sure if it is crown or a natural tooth, but I would never notice anything else "off" about your face! No one's face is perfectly symmetrical, surgery or not, and I think most people are much harder on themselves than anyone else would be. You look like a normal non-plastic person; nothing wrong with that, IMO.

I do understand that after going through all you have with the surgery, you want perfection, but I suspect your surgeon didn't promise it, and it's not always (or even usually) achievable. Be kind to yourself and focus on the positive! :D

I agree with Emily. I also didn't see what you are seeing in terms of asymmetry. I thought your jaw looks symmetrical. That said, I can see the slight midline shift though, but it really isn't noticeable to most people. We really are our own harshest critic. Don't be too hard on yourself, your jaw and face looks good and proportionate to me. Unless of course you have bite or other functional problems, then that's another story. Why did you get double jaw surgery by the way?

I can see that your midline is slightly off, but your teeth are very straight. Looks great! It’s very minimal. Very hard to notice.
