Reversing Bicuspid Extractions and Depressed!

#1 Post by Synergy91 »

Hello everyone, so frustrating, this is my second time writing this again.

So I will start this off by jumping right in just like what the title says. When I was 15 years old I had braces to correct my crooked teeth, but before I got the braces I had to two bicuspids removed from the top, because the orthodontist said my upper jaw was too small and there was no space. However shortly, after getting my braces off when I was 17yrs old I did not like my smile because my smile was very and narrow and it had the sunken in look from the side. Fast forward a few years when I was 23 years old. I met with an orthodontist and had the reversal orthodontics done on my mouth.

The first step was to use a sagittal appliance in my mouth to open some space for the molars and also to increase width of jaw. This took me about 1 year to achieve. After I had the space for molars to be opened up he put braces on my teeth that would open up the extraction space more as well as widen my jaw. This is currently the stage I am at now 1 year 6 months.

However I am not happy with the results at all one of the biggest reasons is because my front teeth are slanted outward too high to the point that I cant see them when my mouth is at rest (making me very depressed). 2 months ago ago he told me that he could pull the top teeth down by 3mm. However at the last appointment when I asked again for him to pull again he said " I am not an artist that is working with a blank sheet, if you want your teeth to look a certain way you are going to need jaw surgery". When he told me that it really, disturbed me especially since before he told me that it was possible to bring my teeth down more and remove the flare look so that they are more visible instead of hidden under my lip.

I will be getting my braces off in summer and then implants. However this is emotionally and mentally draining on me because of the fact that I could see my top teeth before, but now I cant because they are slanted and on an angle. I don't know what I should do anymore and its making me even more depressed. I keep thinking that I am going to need jaw surgery, however I do not want to get surgery done on my jaws just for aesthetic purposes all I want is to be able to see my teeth like before. Please if you have any recommendations let me know or just chime in. I will post picture of my current teeth position below

Can anyone recommend orthodontists in the Los Angeles and Southern California area?

You're right. That doesn't look right. However, you can go to Dr. Hang... he's been reopening spaces for a long time, he's expert in this area and he's in California.

I can see why you're upset after spending so much time and money on something and then not getting a result that's making you happy.
But yeah, I've heard many good things about Dr. Hang and I don't even live in the US haha. Hopefully he isn't your current orthodontist!
Your teeth definitely look lovely and straight but I'm sure someone can help you get more of a result you're happy with, don't give up :jump:

Yes I like the fact that I have space to put the teeth back in. But now from doing my research I have an open bite and potruded front central incisors that are flared way up. On top of that my orthodontist told me they can lower them, then they tell me that they will try as much as possible. I want to try ask him about using TADS to push those front teeth bach or MEAW technique. Have you used either of these two before ??

Yes I think it's an open bite that I have now and front potruded teeth. I want to try TADS or MEAW technique to push them back. I don't know if I can however because it may close that space

Yes, consult as many orthodontists as you can and don't give up.

I wish I seen some of these posts before I had my premolars removed. I am now paranoid but, I am informed and shown pics of a guy that had the same situation as me. A lot of crowding at the front and I was told, the removal of the premolars will open up space for my front teeth otherwise, I am left with crooked teeth. Since having them removed about two weeks ago, I feel shifting in my jaw. I have a slight headache and concern that, this could trash my jaw or appearance. Just the process of crooked teeth sucks as an adult.

Hi,
Was just wondering if anybody is in Toronto or Ontario
who is in the process of undoing bicuspid extractions.
I am in the middle of treatment and very unhappy.
Cannot afford to go to US for treatment multiple times.
Would be grateful for any tips on Canadian orthodontists
At least attempting doing that or expanding palate for adults

I'm in the same position as you, in that I'm also reversing bicuspid extraction orthodontics.

My ortho is pushing my front 6 teeth forward with a non removable device and the teeth are flaring out at an angle.

I was concerned about this and asked my ortho and he told me he could apply torque to the teeth to straighten them again.
I looked it up and this picture details the process.

He didn't seem to think it was much of an issue, and the physics of it makes sense.
So I would say if you can get that done it would be a lot better than moving them back.

I'm no expert but it seems your ortho doesnt have complete knowledge of what he's doing.

You could probably benefit from IPR (shaving down the sides of teeth to make more room). Your teeth are big enough to make it a viable option. Definitely discuss that with your ortho to try to minimize the flaring.

But yeah your best option for perfect teeth is jaw surgery. Only SO much you can do in an adult mouth with a small jaw without flaring
