Upper jaw moves up and down still?

#1 Post by Nanshman »

I had upper and lower jaw surgery 6 months ago. 2ish months ago i noticed that my upper jaw was moving up and down (like dentures) slight but still there. My surgeon said he thinks my bone is soft around the plates and screws and put me back on soft food diet. I have been back and it has gotten slightly better but still moves toward the front. I am only the 3rd person he has seen with this in the 20 years he has been practicing. One was a transfer patient he put a bone graph in and the other healed. He also said that if I haven't firmed up by now then I should look into getting a bone graph. Im kinda confused though cause if its moving up and down then my bone is theoretically soft and why would abone gragh make a difference. I guess my question is has anybody one here experienced anything like this and how did you fix it?

Sorry I have no experience of this but if it was me I would be getting a second opinion and maybe even trying some alternative medicine approach before going in for more surgery (assuming it's not painful for you right now).

I haven't had personal experience with this but with regard to bone graft, from what I understand, it is done to repair or replace missing bone in an area. Basically, healthy bone from other parts of your body is taken to fill the holes around your jawbone.

Your surgeon may have recommended it to help your bone to harden and heal. As for prognosis, your surgeon would be able to advise you.

There was a person who got their surgery at the same time as I did and had a similar issue. How tightly were you banded post-op? Did you clench a lot? When did you start with solid foods?

Thanks for all the replies. I am not in pain which is a blessing. This whole thing has been emotionally stressful and it doesn't help that I look completely healed so no one really gets it. So to answer some questions I was banded for 1 week and then instructed to only deband while eating super soft food. Like super soft. I did that for the 6 weeks. I do clinch, which I noticed after surgery like my body was getting use to the new face. when I went back he had said that the clenching was most likely the problem. And that basically the edges of by bone didn't fuse together and they are, for better lack of words, sliding up and down . I'm not sure how to describe it with out hand gestures Haha. But I'm not entirely sure why it would be moving because they took an x ray and said nothing had moved or bent as far as plates and screw go. I am going to the best in the field for my area as far as I know so I'm not sure who else I would go to. Also i did bring up more of a natural approach with lasers and supplements cause I'm willing to do anything to avoid surgry. He gave me the go ahead and I had Done that for a while and it seemed to help a little but not completely. Soooo the plan right now is to complete my orthodontics because I have some tweaking to do and then go in for a bone graph to clean out any scar tissue and hopefully give more of a surface for my two bones to adhear or fuse to. Also I still have some numbing which is dumb but maybe when my jaw stops moving my nerves can completely heal. Or at least I'm hoping. Also a side note my gums have receded a lot sense surgry and that's annoying but I can feel the whole roof of my mouth when its shut Haha so that's a plus:)

Oops correction in timeline. I got my splint out at like 6 weeks but was still on soft food until week 12 when he checked my jaw and all was well and was cleared to gradually work my way into regular foods which I feel I did.

From reading this study, it appears it could be from clenching when your occlusion wasn’t perfect:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/21112600/

It says that the key indicator of non-union is maxillary mobility (what you have). It says they need to do a 3D CT scan to confirm and it’ll likely require a revision :( Good luck, buddy, and keep us posted!
