And not the a** washing kind.
Just got my braces on an hour ago. Trying to keep it together and not start sobbing about what a stupid idea this all was.
I’m 34 and a first year at uni.
Someone is taking my lunch money tomorrow, aren’t they.

Lol, probably.
But seriously, after a few weeks you'll get used to them. You'll start seeing results soon and then realize what a good decision it was.

Re: B day
Keep that sense of humor, it helps! The first several weeks are not pleasant for a number of reasons. There's of course the issue of trying to speak normally; the small item called eating; and of course the obvious change to your appearance and self image - the psychological part of braces. You'll see lots of advice here on surviving the early days by using lots of dental wax, pain meds as needed, and soft food choices. You might also want to peruse the thread "Confess Your Orthodontic Sins" (you can search on the first few words) for a few laughs and possibly inspiration. As I have said here several times, braces are not for the faint of heart. Best of luck to you. Keep your eye on the prize!

Re: B day
I'm 33 in braces and was surprised how people really didn't seem to notice. I was recently a vendor at a craft market for a day and not ONE single person looked at my teeth, and I was smiling and laughing a lot. I find that strange.
