Final Results - Premolar Extractions, Braces, and Slow Palatal Expansion for Open Bite, Severe Overjet, and Crowding

#1 Post by ruca2 »

I had a severe overjet, open bite, cross bite, crowding, and narrow palate. Treatment consisted of premolar extractions, slow palatal expansion for 10 months, and traditional braces. The total treatment time was 2 years 10 months and 1 day. After treatment was completed, I had upper and lower bonding to even out smile line and crown replacement on a central incisor.

The pain and anguish were all worth it. It's extremely difficult to be an adult in ortho. Whatever your circumstances are you will face challenges and contemplate if it is even worth it. Stick with it as it does get easier throughout your journey. I had a very difficult case and wasn't sure what the end result would be. There were many times that I questioned whether extractions were the right thing to do. Unequivocally I can now say yes. I can go into more depth about my case if anyone has questions. Just reply and I will try to help as much as possible. Good luck to all those currently in treatment and if you are contemplating braces more times than not it is the right decision.

Wow, that's some major changes! Looks awesome. I'm actually amazed by how much easier it was than I thought having braces as an adult but everyone has different experiences, off course!

Wow, congratulations!! Thank you for sharing your wonderful results with us.

If you don't mind me asking, how big was your overjet?

Did you also get a lower incisor extracted?

Nami,
I had one premolar extracted on the lower arch. As a child I had a tooth removed for some reason that I can't recall at the moment.

Congratulations! I can see how extractions were needed in your case. In my case, however, the overjet would be rather small after alignment, as my teeth were very crooked but not too crowded, and extraction of 2 large upper premolars would have been disastrous to my mouth and face. I'm pretty sure the ortho now sees it my way, she just won't admit to it. If I had been smart about this (you know, get all the information FIRST) and I REALLY needed to extract teeth (which I didn't!), I would have chosen a second premolar (much smaller). This would have left me with a gap of only 3-4 mm, and still a correct bite. Had I gone through with both extractions my upper teeth would need to be pulled so far back that they would then be angled out/up to accommodate the lower ones. I would have hated my teeth/mouth/face like that... If only my ortho had listened to my goals, instead of just doing whatever she wanted! I still hate her guts for leading me down this path with lies and deceit...
