Just noticed archwire marks - is it possible to stain or chip wires?

#1 Post by Couleurs »

So I just got my braces put on yesterday, and today I noticed 3 small marks in the very front of my archwire (the wire itself, not on the ligatures or brackets). Is it possible to stain/chip archwires? I know ligatures are at greatest risk of stains, but Googling doesn't show any posts about the wire itself staining or chipping.

I haven't eaten anything solid yet, so it's not food related - could it be from my electric toothbrush? Or are small marks in the archwire is normal? (maybe they're guides for bracket placement or something?)

I have these marks as well! I have thought that the ortho might've put them there so they know where the middle of the arch is when it's being put in the brackets?

There are three small marks in the middle of my top archwire. I have had it changed several times, and the marks are on every new wire, so I think they are there for centering the archwire. They make sure they are centered on the midline of your central incisors when installing the new wire, and then if it migrates to one side or the other (mine always does, a little), it means something has shifted in your upper arch.

This is my best guess; I haven't asked. But the marks are normal, THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT IT TO THE ADMINISTRATOR. THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT IT TO THE ADMINISTRATOR. THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT IT TO THE ADMINISTRATOR. THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT IT TO THE ADMINISTRATOR.. :)

The marks disappear within a few days with normal brushing.

Mine don't. They seem to be permanent. I expect it depends on the exact make/model of archwire your orthodontist uses.
